When it comes to decorating your home, nothing makes a house feel more complete than decorative pots and plants. Putting the right combination of potted and hanging plants in a room can turn any ordinary room into one with style and creativity.
But as the trend of decorating continues to grow, the outside of the house is becoming just as important as the inside. Now days, everything from furniture to carpet is being made to withstand the elements.
But one area that many consumers forget to consider when it comes to indoor and outdoor decorating is pots.
Pots are made specifically for indoor and outdoor use and should be used appropriately.
Ernst Swietelsky is the president of Pots Company. He has been in the business for more than 30 years. They first started importing wicker pots but now concentrate solely on ceramics.
Swietelsky has had years of experience when it comes to dealing with indoor and outdoor pots and knows what consumers should look for when purchasing for their homes.
"It depends on your climate," Swietelsky said. "If it's freezing during the wintertime, you have to be very careful with what type of pots you leave outside."
The best thing about outdoor garden pots is that they come in all different styles, colors and sizes. So if a consumer wanted to do something special with an outdoor garden pot, there is a much larger variety to choose from.
Swietelsky said that consumers should look into the type of pot that they are getting because different pots react differently to certain elements.
"Plain terracotta pots probably will not withstand a freeze because they suck up water which freezes, expands, and cracks the pot," he said. "The glazed ceramic ones made in Vietnam will definitely survive the winter. They are fired at high temperatures and do not have a high water absorption rate."
"Wicker baskets can be used inside or on the patio where it is more protected," he added. "However, the durability is not as good as the terracotta or the ceramic."
In addition to the pots that can be used for outdoor use, there are pots that can be used in both climates. These pots allow decorators to be more creative.
"Another very popular pot is the fiberglass pot," Swietelsky said. "It comes in different finishes, is lightweight, and is resistant to freeze. You can use it inside or outside, and it's about the same price as a ceramic one. Some of the holiday oriented pots are much smaller and may cost only $5-$10."
Just as with outdoor pots, when choosing indoor pots you should also consider where in your house you will place the plant. Knowing where the sun rises and sets is a tip not to forget when finding a good spot for your indoor plant.
Also, remember that certain areas of your home may have different climate zones as well. Check for air conditioner vents that may lower the temperature dramatically.
