It's very important to brush twice a day and to floss daily. Decay is caused by bacteria that are naturally occurring in your mouth. Most of us have it from the time we are babies. Whenever you eat something, the bacteria get active producing an acid that digests food but that also live inside the tooth if you have a cavity. The more meals you eat, the more acid they produce making the holes bigger and bigger. The key to oral hygiene is to get rid of bacteria every single day. It takes about 24 hours for bacteria to form on your teeth. Make sure every single spot on the tooth is brushed or flossed every day. If you do, you are making great strides to reducing the amount of decay and gum disease that you'll have. We still have trouble getting people to floss, but it is amazing how much healthier the population has become over the 20 years I have been practicing. The town has become so much healthier now. Overusing a toothpick can also harm your teeth. I have seen people who will play a little bit too much with them. A toothbrush and floss is really all you need. You don't want to poke sharp things in there too often.
