Gift Ideas For Children: Choosing And Decorating

It may be difficult to know what the perfect gift for a child is when you do not have a child of your own. Here are some gift ideas for choosing and decorating the perfect gift for a child.

If you do not have children, sometimes it may be difficult to choose proper gifts for them. If the child's parents do not tell you what is needed for the child, it can also be overwhelming to choose an appropriate gift. There are so many choices when going into a store! There are toys, games, sport equipment, clothing, and more. How do you buy the right gift?

First, ask the parents if they have registered anywhere for the child. Many stores allow people to register for just about any occasion, including baby showers or children's parties. If they have registered, it is easy to go into the store, find the service desk, have them print a registry, and choose a gift. The parents have done the work for you. But sometimes it's not that simple. If the parents have not registered, you are on your own.

While it is tempting to choose a gift that strikes your fancy or that you enjoyed when you were a child, it is best to consider the child's age, development, and what they want or need instead of what you like. If the child is only one year old, it is not practical to choose a gift for a child of three, thinking the parents can hold onto it until the child is ready. Also, some people may think the child is smart for his or her age, and buy gifts that are not age-appropriate. Most toys have age guidelines printed right on the packaging. It is best to follow these guidelines, and not be tempted by other more advanced toys.

Another consideration when purchasing a gift for a child is the age of younger siblings also. While the child you are buying a gift for may be able to have toys with smaller parts, it may be wiser to buy a different gift without the smaller parts if there are younger children in the house who could get into their sibling's toys.

When choosing a gift for a child, think about what the child and parents are interested in. What are their values? If the parents are against guns, it may not be a good choice to buy a toy gun for the child. The same holds true for play knives, bows and arrows, and other toys that may not be what the parents want their child to have.

When buying a gift for a smaller child, for example a child who is under two, many people like to buy cute little outfits. Clothing is a great gift, if the article of clothing is chosen properly. Do not buy clothing with tiny buttons, or other decorations that a small child may be able to pop off and put in his or her mouth. Pants or one-piece outfits with snaps at the legs and crotch make for easier changing of diapers. Snaps at the neck or on the shoulder make it easier to dress the child also. Clothing that is a bit bigger than the child needs at that time will be appreciated, because children grow out of clothes so quickly. Also consider the season when purchasing clothing. If the child will turn one in summer, it is not a good idea to purchase winter clothing that is a twelve-month size.

When wrapping and decorating gifts, consideration must also be given for the child's age. Latex balloons are a serious hazard. If a child accidentally pops the balloon, they may be injured by the small pieces of latex. They can also choke on it. If you decided to buy a balloon, the non-latex shiny balloons are better.

There are many small decorative items, such as bows or ribbons, that people like to use to decorate packages. This is fine for older children, but for small ones it is best to skip theses decorative touches. When using a gift bag, tissue paper may be a better choice than decorative straw or confetti. Smaller children love to put shiny things in their mouths.

There are some larger department stores that will give, along with a regular receipt, one that has the item number but no price printed on it. You can give this receipt to the parents, and they will not know how much you paid for the gift, but will know where to exchange or return it if needed. This is a good idea if you are uncertain of the gift you have chosen. If you do not go to a store that has this option, you can also place the regular cash register receipt in a separate envelope, seal it, write on the envelope what the gift is, and give it to the parents. They only need to open it if there is a problem with the gift.

It may seem difficult to choose just the right gift, but it is out there! The key is to take the time to decide which one is the perfect one.
