When asked about lawn care tools, Merrideth Jiles, who is the garden center manager at The Great Outdoors Nursery and Landscaping Center in Austin, Texas, says, "There are always going to be times when you are going to need to rake. Mulching your leaves back in is a good idea, but if you have a massive quantity of leaves at one time or if it is raining a lot in the fall and the leaves are staying wet and you cannot cut, then you'll need to rake. It would be a good idea to have a spreader and it's probably a good idea to have a hose and sprayer. That's really about it. I would say the best tool that a homeowner could have would be someone that they know and trust at an independent garden center to help them with their lawn"

Leaves and other debris, through mulching, are the best fertilizer that soil can have, but sometimes it is necessary to do more. Another tool many lawn keepers rely on is a good fertilizer. Before you decide on a manufactured fertilizer though, you need to test your soil to make sure that it is in the right condition to receive the nutrients. A complete test kit can be bought at any local garden center, including instructions and what the results exactly mean. This small step will ensure that you buy the right products for your lawn in the beginning and do not waste time and money on something that will not work, or make its condition worse. You should also discuss any other concerns, such as small children or pets, with the expert at the garden center in order to keep your loved ones safe from exposure to the chemicals. Also, too little fertilization is the most common reason for an unhealthy lawn but doing it wrong can cause chemical burning, so make sure to read and follow all of the instructions for the particular fertilizer that you choose. If you do not completely understand them, ask an expert to clarify before you attempt anything.

A garden hose or sprinkler system for watering is probably one of the most important lawn care tools that you can have to keep it lush and green. It is said that 85 percent of a grass's bulk is water, so it makes sense that it turns brown and dies when lost moisture is not being continually replaced. Most of how and when you should water depends upon common sense. After a string of particularly hot and dry days, it will need more, and in turn, you do not see many people out spraying after a downpour. This also depends though, on the type of grass that you have. Just like other living things, different types of grass require different maintenance. It is best to learn about the specifics of your lawn, through internet research, gardening books, or asking someone at a garden care center. If you choose to install an automatic watering system, Jiles says, With an automatic sprinkler system, hopefully it works and that is one of the things where you have to cross your fingers. Having somebody come by and check on your lawn while you're away would not be a bad idea."
