Greenhouses probably started around the 17th century or so when they made glass bells to place over plants for protection. Modern greenhouses came into existence after World War II with the invention of the plastic. They were much more cost-effective and easier to build.

A greenhouse is used to provide optimum growing conditions for plants. They can range from the quite simple using a metal hook covered with plastic, to the more sophisticated using heavier steel gutters, a glass roof, and automatic temperature controls. The sophisticated ones start at around $500. To find a greenhouse specialist, you could contact either the trade association or a greenhouse company to get a list of contractors. You should check on your local building codes to see if a building permit is required.
