What Is A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter And Is It Possible To Install One Mys

What is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter and is it possible to install one mys. The GFCI protects against electrocution in the home. It is an extremely important electrical safety device. Some individuals may be able to install it themselves. However, it is recommended that you have someone who knows what they are doing.

Safety in and around the home has and always will be a huge part of a consumer's everyday life. It may be the dream of most consumers to own their own home so that they can make the necessary changes and adjustments when needed, but being able to dress a home with the perfect compliment of curtains and carpets would be very difficult to do in a home that has burned to the ground.

Every year, tens of thousands of people are killed in the United States because of an injury or a mishap in the home dealing with electricity. One area that has a fine-line when dealing with electricity is water. Water is one of the better conductors for electricity and can cause severe damage if someone is in contact with water as well as an electric source.

A device that experts suggest should always be used when it comes to dealing with electricity and water is a ground fault circuit interrupter. Ground fault circuit interrupters are basically the outlets with the test and reset buttons on them. The ground fault circuit interrupter works by detecting the flow of electricity through the outlet.

Michael G. Clendenin is the executive director for the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). ESFI is North America's only non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to the promotion of electrical safety in the home, school, and workplace. He has created a catalog of electrical safety resources, issuing safety tips through publications, media relations, and their website. He currently acts as the spokesperson for the ESFI and the electrical industry on matters of electrical safety awareness. Clendenin says that having a ground fault circuit interrupter can be huge in helping to prevent electrical accidents in the home.

"A ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, is a safety device common in today's homes," he explains. "It is designed to detect even minute leakage of electrical current off the circuit. GFCIs act immediately to shut off the circuit to prevent an accidental electric shock injury or electrocution. Even if the GFCI is working properly, people can still be shocked. However, the GFCI can act quickly to prevent electrocution."

Just as with anything around the house, experts always advise consumers to get professional help before attempting to install. But in situations that deal with electricity, it's even more vital that the consumer take every necessary safety precaution.

The importance of electrical safety goes much further than just purchasing a ground fault circuit interrupter for your home. First, experts say that a ground fault circuit interrupter should be used in any space or area that has water or a water leakage. Also, consumers should be very careful if attempting to install a ground fault circuit interrupter on their own.

"Consumers are encouraged to use a qualified and certified electrician to install circuit breaker-type GFCIs," Clendenin says. "Individuals with strong knowledge of electrical wiring practices, who can follow the instructions accompanying the device, may be able to install receptacle-type GFCIs. The portable GFCI requires no special knowledge or equipment to install."
