Guide To Waffle Knit Pajamas

The luxurious warmth and cuddly softness of waffle knit fabric is hard to beat. Learn how to choose the coziest waffle knit pajamas.

Much like the little "pockets" or squares in waffles hold butter and syrup, the pockets in waffle knit fabric hold in body heat to keep you warm and toasty. The textured exterior is often accompanied by a brushed cotton interior for lush softness against the skin. These are some of the reasons waffle knit is one of the best fabric choices for pajamas.

While nearly any waffle knit pajamas will be comfortable, there are things to keep in mind to choose those best suited to your needs.

HOW WELL ARE THEY MADE?

Examine the overall quality of each piece and pay special attention to construction details. Necklines, arms, shoulders, waistbands, and hems should be reinforced to insure durability and help the garment retain the proper shape. Also, make sure there are no loose threads or irregular stitches, and be sure that the seams line up correctly. Hold the item up and shake it out. Try to fold it seam to seam. You will be able to tell immediately if the seams do not line up properly.

Quality garments should have finished edges, pockets, cuffs, and other details that stay flat and do not curl up. Since waffle knit does stretch, make sure any buttonholes or other types of closures are tightly constructed and reinforced so they will not lose shape with time, wear, and washings.

MATERIALS

Fiber content is another issue, and it can easily be determined by checking the tag. Noting the percentage and type of each material used will help you determine the quality, durability, and comfort of the garment.

For example, there are many types of cotton and the amount of cotton in a garment makes a big difference in wear and care. For many, the higher the cotton content, the better, but remember that a garment made from a high percentage of cotton does run a greater risk of shrinkage.

If you choose 100% cotton, you may want to forego placing the garment in the dryer, even if the care tag says doing so is acceptable. You may prefer a polyester cotton blend, which will not only dry faster, but will shrink less and may keep its shape better. The higher the concentration of polyester, the less soft and comfortable the garment may be, so you might want to choose a blend that has a high concentration of cotton with a small amount of polyester.

Whichever fibers you decide on, be sure to follow the care instructions carefully. The only exception is, as noted above, foregoing use of the dryer if you are concerned about shrinkage.

SIZE

Also, be sure to size your waffle knit pajamas carefully. Knits may tend to run small due to the stretch factor, and pajamas should gently drape the body and allow plenty of room for movement. Waistbands and cuffs should not be tight.

Trying on knit pajamas before purchase is the safest bet. If you are unable to do so, study the sizing guide carefully. Also, remember that natural fibers shrink more than synthetics, so if the size you try on just fits and you have concerns about shrinkage, you may need to purchase a size or two larger.

STYLE

If you picture men's thermal underwear when you hear waffle knit, don't worry. This knit comes in many different colors, solids and prints, so there is something for everyone. The styles are also far more attractive than your typical "long johns." You can choose from floor length nightgowns, to a tunic and Capri pants or a Henley style shirt with full-length pants, or many other comfortable, attractive styles in your choice of color and pattern.
