Hangover Prevention

The best cure for a hangover is prevention. How to drink responsibly to avoid those nasty headaches and stomach upsets.

With fifteen years bartending experience behind me, I can safely say that I've had more than my share of experience with hangovers. It's one of life's little reminders that we've overdone something or simply haven't prepared ourselves properly. Over the years I've experimented with many different remedies and I can honestly say, very few will actually help let alone cure a hangover.

Mild or heavy duty, a hangover is extremely uncomfortable and can honestly be avoided completely no matter what type of alcohol you drink. The main cause of a hangover, besides the obviousm overindulgence, is dehydration! Alcohols and the sugars they contain are notorious for sucking the liquid from your body. It's the main reason your head hurts and your stomach gets upset.

Obviously, the simplest solution for the dehydration is water...and plenty of it! Most people know ahead of time that they'll be drinking, either an upcoming party or the impending weekend. Start drinking water when you get up that morning, drink as much as you can during the day. Try to get at least ten eight ounce glasses of water down before you start drinking your alcohol of choice.

While you're drinking, make every other drink a glass of water. It won't fill you up as much as you're thinking, really! If it does limit your alcohol intake, you're drinking too quickly to begin with and there probably isn't any hope of avoiding a hangover anyway. I've been using this method for several years now, and for all the years I've done this, I've been hangover free!

Eating something while you're drinking is also a good way to help avoid a hangover, and for petes sake, don't EVER drink on an empty stomach! Believe me, having the dry heaves is NOT a pleasant experience!

Okay, so what if you've forgotten to use this preventative water cure, or for some strange reason...water isn't readily available, and you wake up with a hangover? You guessed it...WATER! As much as you can handle. It may take a couple of hours to work into your system, but at least the hangover won't last the entire day. There are also quite a few sports drinks on the market today that could work for you even better. Though I can't honestly recommend any of them, I've always used plain old water.

Although controversial, you can shorten the time for the above hangover cure by doing something that will make you sweat. As I said earlier, the other cause of a hangover is overindulgence. Now you've got more alcohol in your system than your body can process out, sweating is another way to get that nasty stuff out of your body.

Still, I'm a firm believer that prevention is the best cure when it comes to a hangover. Drink responsiblyor don't drink at all, get plenty of water in your system before, during, and even after you drink alcoholic beverages and I guarantee...you'll never suffer from another hangover again!
