Virginia City is starting to develop a reputation as one of the most haunted communities in the nation. Back in 1800s, Virginia City was a relatively violent community that at one point had a higher homicide rate than San Francisco. There were a lot traumatic deaths as a result of mining accidents and railroad accidents, so there is an unsettled spirit in and around the community. The town has a lot of haunted places. Susan Sutton was very skeptical about spirits and ghosts when she first moved here, but she has experienced strange occurrences at the visitor's center at night. Lights have been turned on and off, and doors have opened and locked by themselves. Sutton has heard from tourism venues and private homes where they talk about ghost sightings. St. Mary's Art Center, which used to be Mary Louie Hospital, has a room that they are now using as an art studio because artists want to stay in the room. Artists use it because they feel it's inspirational to their creative endeavors. There is another house that used to be a bed and breakfast called the Crooked House. The gentleman who lives there says they have spirits occupying the house who don't like him, but they like his wife. The spirits fool around with the electricity, so he has to tell them to leave the lights alone at night.
