Health: How To Reduce Stress In Your Life

You can control the stress in your life by limiting your expectations, cultivating a positive attitude, getting organized, excercising, and talking with others about your problems.

Daily living can be stressful in itself. When you add in unexpected problems, illnesses, deaths, and life changes, however, life can seem overwhelming. Some people have more difficulty coping with their problems, while others seem to breeze right through their lives. What can you do to reduce the stress in your life? Is it possible to live a stress-free life?

First, you need to accept the fact that life will throw you a few curve balls along the way. It is nearly inevitable that you will have to deal with some type of difficulty, minor or major. Once you realize this, you can begin working on ways to deal with the stress that will invariably come your way.

Try not to compound your problems by expecting too much of yourself. You need to realize and recognize your limitations. A common stress factor among many people is that they set unrealistic goals and expectations that are virtually impossible to reach or achieve. Remember, nobody is perfect, and neither are you!

Attitude can play a major role in how you handle stress. There have been studies conducted which have shown that people with catastrophic diseases have benefited greatly when they assume a positive and upbeat attitude. Stress can also be reduced if you try to wake up each morning and think positively. If you have trouble doing that, you may want to keep a journal. Fill it with only positive things that have happened to you during the day. If you are having an especially difficult day, review the positive things that have happened to you in the previous days. You may be surprised at how many good things happen to you!

Stress is often increased simply because people are so unorganized. If you are one of these people, take stock of your life. How can you simplify your life? You may want to start by creating a few lists. Some people make a daily to-do list to help them stay on task and to accomplish small goals. Simply marking items off a list can give you a feeling of accomplishment. Try not to take on too many projects at one time. Instead, plan on finishing one project completely, then start the next one. You may find that you can designate specific projects, errands, and goals to other members of the family and co-workers. Remember, you don't have to do everything!

Often, people feel competitive at work or in their personal lives. While a little competition may be a good motivator, too much unnecessary competition may only increase your stress level. You need to recognize that there may be someone who is simply better at a task than you, and you shouldn't feel incompetent because of this fact. You don't have to be the best at everything!

Many people deal with stress through exercise and/or relaxation methods such as yoga, meditation, prayer, and self-hypnosis. If you are not disciplined enough to regularly exercise or do some type of relaxation activity on your own, there are probably many classes available in your area. You just have to get out there and find the class for you!

Accept the fact that you need a support system of some kind. Your support system may be your family, friends, or co-workers. Don't keep everything in and think that you can handle everything on your own. Human beings are sociable creatures. We are not meant to live a life of solitude. You do not have to go through difficulties and handle problems all on your own. Find someone who will listen, and talk to them!

Finally, take time to have some fun. Learn a new hobby. Set aside some time each day to do something you enjoy. It doesn't have to take up much time. If you love to read, find some time to read at least one chapter of a book or browse through a favorite magazine. Long walks have been proven to reduce stress, so take the time to relax and enjoy a beautiful morning or evening. Invite a friend to the movies or out to eat. Take a short, weekend vacation. It really doesn't matter what you do, as long as you are relaxed while you do it. Stress doesn't have to consume your life!
