Heavy equipment and construction equipment training completed at a vocational or technical college may lead to certification or an Associate's degree. A number of trade schools and colleges around Kentucky offer construction equipment training and heavy equipment training programs. Considerations
Individuals who wish to complete their training outside of Kentucky can obtain the skills and knowledge needed to be successful heavy equipment operators, but will need a commercial driver's license from Kentucky in order to work for a Kentucky-based employer. The Kentucky Department of Transportation requires all commercial drivers to provide a valid medical certificate, complete an application and pass a knowledge test and vision test. All first-time commercial drivers will be issued a CDL instruction permit that is valid for six months; after this permit period is over, the driver may obtain a regular CDL for a fee of $40.
Misconceptions
Completing heavy equipment training programs in Kentucky does not necessarily mean that the individual is certified to be a crane operator. Workplace legislation set forth by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) require all construction equipment operators who will be using cranes to pass a written and practical exam. Some training programs have a dedicated course for crane training, but the Associated Training Services Network also offers an online training program.
