Overview
Heavy equipment operators can work in a variety of construction-related fields that require competence in operating backhoes, excavators, mobile cranes, bulldozers and much more. Schools and training centers accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) offer courses that prepare students for certification from the NCCER. This is a national certification that transfers from state to state. There are no licenses required to operate heavy equipment, but most employers look at certifications as credentials indicating a certain level of training and ability.
Certificates
The heavy equipment national certification curriculum consists of a basic introduction to heavy equipment. Various applications within the industry are covered, as well as basic operational techniques. Level 2 training introduces the student to more equipment and how to handle it. Bulldozer, forklift and grader operations are covered. In addition, students are taught safety procedures, rigging and equipment maintenance.
Advanced
Advanced heavy-equipment courses cover areas such as operating hydraulic equipment and motor graders. An advanced course also prepares the student for project-management careers. Each level carries its own certificate. The more training an operator has, the more career opportunities are available.
CDL License
A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is required in the United States for drivers of heavy equipment on roads and highways. Hauling equipment on a flatbed or driving a dump truck on public roads requires a CDL license. Most schools that offer heavy-equipment training also have lessons available to help a student pass the CDL license examination.
Online
Online training courses in heavy-equipment operation are available that give students an overview and understanding of the industry without the hands-on training of live instruction. Organizations like Associated Training Services provide online resources for free to students, who are then referred to a local training center to complete the training necessary for most employment opportunities. Online educational courses can help graduates secure an entry-level position as a heavy-equipment operator apprentice.
Trade Association
The National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS) is a nonprofit organization that monitors training programs nationwide and recommends standards and quality of training for the industry. Schools that are recommended by NAHETS are subjected to high standards, and must utilize the most up-to-date training techniques that include videos, seminars and simulators. NAHET member schools include the Georgia School of Construction, the Oklahoma College of Construction and the Northern and Southern California Colleges of Construction. All NAHETS schools and most other heavy-equipment-training operations provide job-placement assistance for graduates of their programs.
