Helping A Friend Who Is Abused At Home

Helping a friend who is abused at home. If you plan on helping a friend who is a victim of domestic violence and abuse, you need to develop a safety plan. You can do this by calling the National Domestic Abuse Hotline.

We encourage you to do that, but we encourage you to do it in the safe way. Once you are providing that information that perhaps your friend is beating up his wife or his girlfriend, then you yourself are in danger, because that friend knows that you know about it. So I think that it's really important for them to call the hotline and talk that situation through with an advocate and be able to form a safety plan for themselves as well, and to figure out the best way to go about approaching the situation. We also have a website, www.ndvh.org, which stands for the National Domestic Violence Hotline. You can go on there and there are facts from around the country, there are statistics, there are signs to look out for, and there are resources that are available for friends and family members. We have all sorts of stuff on our website where people, either victims or friends and family members, can log on and really get the answers they need without having to call in.
