    Whether you want to print family photos or just simply make copies of text documents for school or work, a printer is an important part of nearly all computer systems. While using the printer is fairly easy, setting it up can be more difficult, especially for the technologically challenged.

    • Step 1

      Remove all of the contents of the printer's box and make sure that all of the components are included. Check the fold out poster or text instructional manual included with the printer as they will show you what cables and CDs should be present. Return the printer to the store for an exchange if you are missing any parts.

    • Step 2

      Untie any twist ties that may be connecting the cables or printer to cardboard or Styrofoam backing. Remove the strips of tape and pieces of cloth holding down the moving pieces of the printer.

    • Step 3

      Turn on your computer and put the installation disc into your CD drive. Follow the prompts that come up to begin the installation process.

    • Step 4

      Connect the power cord to your printer and then plug it into a electrical outlet. Connect the USB or serial cable to your printer and then connect the other end to your computer when the installation software tells you to.

    • Step 5

      Remove the ink cartridges from their packages and pull the strip of tape off the back. Open the printer's top segment and snap the ink cartridges into place.

    • Step 6

      Choose the option on the screen to print a test page to ensure that the printer is working properly.

    • Tip: Check the back of the printer box before making a purchase to see if you need to buy a separate USB cable or ink cartridges.
    • Tip: If you lose the installation CD you can still download the installation program directly from Hewlett Packard's website.
    • Warning:
    • Do not plug the printer's USB or serial cable into your computer before the software prompts you to do so or you may have to completely re-start the entire installation process.
