General tips for hiking on mountains: You have to think about the type of trip you are taking. If you are doing a lot of hiking, walking, and running at home and you have hills around where you live, your legs are probably in pretty good shape. A day trip doesn't take as much planning. However, if you are planning to hike for a weekend or an entire week, you must pace yourself no matter what kind of shape you are in.

Another important tip about hiking in the mountains: When you are hiking to higher elevations, the height will affect you. You need to slow down so that your breathing is reasonable. Some people do get elevation sickness. The symptoms of the sickness are headaches, nausea, and breathing problems.

Q: What if I have asthma and I am hiking up a mountain?

Asthma patients can be affected by elevation quite a bit so you have to be aware of that. Test yourself to see if you can handle that. One thing I recommend is, if you are at a really high elevation drink a lot of water. That can really fend off some of the headaches and so forth. Everybody has a different tolerance. I have friends that can't even tolerate 6000 to 7000 feet and others that climb to 18,000 to 20,000 feet. If you start feeling sick, you don't want to stay where you are at, you want to go down, or you can get into trouble pretty quickly. It is a whole different ballgame to hike up a mountain and to do high elevation hiking.

Hikers who take long trips use poles and all those things to help them with long mountain hikes. They have gotten into shape over a long period of time to do those kinds of things. I know so many people that have hiked to mountain Kilimanjaro and haven't ever done any kind of hiking before. Some can do it, but they have a hard time. Hiking is a lot more pleasant, if you are in shape and you know how you are going to handle the elevation before you go. Sometimes you just don't know, until you get up that high. There are some medications for elevation sickness that you can take to assist you in your adventure. I can't tell you the name of it exactly, because I don't come across it that often, but there is medication out there that helps some people with elevation problems.
