There are so many trails that, for a visitor, the best thing is to go to one of the resorts. They have plenty of hiking and information centers and they can send you sheets on plenty of nearby hiking trails. There are plenty of hiking trails in the National Parks too. Those are some of the most spectacular trails. The other thing to do is just buy a book on the region. There are just so many trails and the trail hunts are easy to find. But without a book, it's difficult to find some of the places to begin. Just look for any Colorado hiking book. A lot of them are broken up by the regions, so you want to make sure that there are hikes within the region that you are going to be in. A lot of them are done by ability too, so if you are a family, you don't want to get a book for technical climbing. Usually the books are after a specific market, so you can tell very quickly by looking at the cover. Go to Rocky Mountain National Park. There are hundreds of trails of all abilities in the park and really some of the prettiest hiking that you can have is there. Bring water, as Colorado is very dry. You don't realize it, but in the winter we are drier than Phoenix, so dehydration is a problem. So, drink plenty of water and you want to hike early if you are going above timberline. You want to be heading down around noon because lightning storms sometimes happen in the afternoon. You don't want to be above timberline when there are lighting storms. Have good sturdy shoes and plenty of film or a digital camera.
