Although many people consider American history to be concentrated in the eastern portion of the United States, there is actually a wealth of history on the West Coast, as well. Seattle, Washington is a perfect example of a city in the western United States that is rich in both historic and contemporary sites that are not to be missed when making a trip to this fantastic city.

One of the most obvious and outstanding sites in Seattle is, of course, the city's signature building, the Space Needle. The building is a total of 605 feet high, and you can go as high as 520 if you visit the Space Needle's observation deck. Get a real taste of Seattle at the Space Needle's restaurant, Sky City. This restaurant rotates a full circle per hour, so you will be sure to enjoy a complete panoramic view of Seattle during your meal. It will certainly be an experience to remember.

Tillicum Village represents Seattle's vast Native American history. Here you can learn about Native American life on the Northwest Coast. You can enjoy steaming clams and dining on fresh salmon, enjoy a meal in the cedar longhouse, and watch enthralling dance performances that depict the legends and history of the Northwest Coast Native Americans. The Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle is the only museum in the United States that is dedicated entirely to Nordic history and culture. The museum is located in a renovated schoolhouse from the early 20th century. Here you can view an extensive exhibit of Nordic art, artifacts, and culture that can be traced all the way back to the time of the Vikings. Learn about the history of Scandinavians immigrating to America and settling in the Pacific Northwest. The museum also features a library and regular classes about Scandinavian language and art.

During 1897 and 1898, the United States felt a profound impact from the Klondike Gold Rush that took place at that time. The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park exhibits how Seattle was affected by the gold rush. The museum displays antique mining equipment, photos and films depicting events in the Klondike Gold Rush, and rotating exhibits that display interesting aspects from this incredible gold rush of the late 19th century.

Seattle's history is full of Asian culture, some of which can be seen at the Seattle Asian Art Museum. This museum displays an extensive collection of pottery, painting, and textiles from many countries in Southeast Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. The museum offers gallery tours, and craft activities that compliment the current exhibits are available for children.

Seattle is a coastal city and thus it is rich in marine history, as well. Take a look at this interesting history at the Northwest Seaport and Maritime Heritage Center. This center features several historic ships that have been completely restored to their original glory. The center also features a gift shop and several exhibits on the area's maritime history.
