It is one of the oldest forms of dance. It's basically considered a folk dance from the Middle Eastern North Africa. There are many different details of history and people have different ideas. The dancing girls in Algeria would perform; the French Legionnaire would throw money to them. They put it on their costumes that became part of their dowry. They got married. They didn't dance again or I would say decided to go to the city and become dancers. So it's a little bit of what they did to raise money for dowry. Other time people say it's what the woman of the harem did and for each other basically or for birthing rituals, I don't know about that. They were like courtesans and they would dance on the Nile for the rich noble man and the families with musicians. There are still a couple of those left. So, it's the old history. It goes way back from India and the Ottoman Empire going into Egypt and North Africa.
