That is a very good question. It was a real estate development back in the 20s and 30s and I believe that that's the name they coined for the area. It's in Hollywood, but it's on the eastern edge of Hollywood and what they were trying to do is develop that area with homes. So to announce it, to call attention to it, the real estate developers placed the sign up in the hills and it just so happened that as the movie industry flourished in the 20s and 30s Hollywood was associated with the sign. You can't really get to the Hollywood sign because the road is really obscure though there might be a reason for that. Typically it's not as user friendly as people imagine it to be, because it's really high up and the roads leading up to it are dead ends and so curvy that you can't really get that close to the sign unless you are hiking or doing some recreation activities in that part of the hills. You can get close enough certainly were you are at eye level with it or maybe drive over a road that takes you near it, but you can never get to it. It's not lit up at night or anything. So, it's really kind of interesting how it is an icon; it's definitely not as dressed up as you know a statue of liberty or things like that in other cities.
