Diehard fishermen don’t wait for the warm weather of summer to fish in the beautiful state of Maryland. Why would they? There are plenty of fishing opportunities year round, even in the coldest of weather. With its beautiful rivers and lakes and its breathtaking shoreline and bay area, Maryland is an angler’s dream come true.

You might want to begin your Maryland fishing adventure with a trip to the Chesapeake Bay area. Striped bass are known to be plentiful in the upper bay area of Chesapeake. With each seasonal change comes a whole new environment for fishing. If you can adapt to the various weather conditions, you’ll enjoy fishing here. One of the most popular areas of the upper bay is Susquehanna River. This river and its surrounding flats are great places to cast your bait.

Other rivers in the upper bay area of Chesapeake include the Magothy and Patapsco Rivers. Their waters are often more pristine than the Susquehanna, and you can usually catch striped bass here, also.

As you move down to the mid-bay area of Chesapeake, you can troll along the edge of the neighboring shipping channel. Various migrating fish, including flounder, mackerel, white perch, and striped bass, can be found navigating their way along the channel, and this is an excellent area to fish the bay. There are plenty of charter outfits available to take you to where the fish are biting. The Choptank River, located in the mid-bay area, usually provides anglers an opportunity to catch croaker and striped bass.

One of the most popular areas in the lower bay region of Chesapeake is a fishing hole near Solomon’s Bridge. White perch are often plentiful here. Spanish mackerel and croaker are also commonly caught in the lower bay area. The Tangier Sound area of lower bay boasts flounder, sea trout, and speckled trout. You can find an abundance of charter outfits to take you here, also.

If action is what you crave, you will want to check out all of the sport fishing opportunities at Ocean City, Maryland. If you want to do some offshore fishing, you will find there are a variety of fish available. This is considered one of the best sport fishing areas off the east coast. Blue marlin, white marlin, dolphin, wahoo, tuna, and shark are just some of the many large game fish caught here.

Closer to shore, you’ll be likely to catch tautog, seabass, and bluefish. Many offshore and inshore tournaments are held here, and there are a host of charter outfits to choose from. Ocean City is considered the white marlin capital of the world. You don’t have to have a boat to get in on the action at Ocean City, however. You can fish from one of several piers and bridges in the area. You can also surf fish along the Maryland shoreline for kingfish and sea trout, among others. If you have your own boat, there are several public boat ramps available.

Assateague, Maryland is another wonderful fishing destination. Surf fishing is quite popular here. If you aren’t sure about what tackle to use, you can check with local bait and tackle shops. Experienced Assateague fishermen usually pay attention to the tide to determine the type of tackle and bait needed. There are a wide variety of fish caught in these waters, and they include flounder, croaker, kingfish, spot, drum, bass, blue fish, puffer and shark, along with several other species.

No matter what type of fishing you enjoy, Maryland will be sure to please even the pickiest angler. With its beautiful rivers, bays, and shoreline, Maryland is a great place to go for a true fishing adventure.
