Cape Cod offers an abundance of fishing, and even if you are not an experienced angler, you can become a successful fisherman on or off its beautiful coast. Striped bass and blue fish are some of the most plentiful and popular fish to be found around Cape Cod. Tuna, false Albacore, bluefins, yellowfins, cod and, occasionally, flounder are just some of the many types of fish available.

Because of its prime location, Cape Cod attracts many varieties of fish as they migrate towards the south. Stripers are some of the most plentiful fish and can grow very large by the end of the summer season.

Cape Cod offers such a variety of fishing areas. There are channel mouths, inlets, and sandy flats. All of these provide excellent places for fish to live. Of course, there is always offshore fishing, but if you don’t have access to a boat or just want to fish the shore, there is plenty of opportunity for that, too. Cape Cod offers 40 miles of beach, and surf fishermen find plenty of fish. To fish from the bank, you might want to try Cape Cod Canal. Another great spot is at Surf Drive Beach at Falmouth and Outer Cape Beaches.

If you want some off shore excitement, then you might want to check out one of the many charter oufits available on Cape Cod. The experienced captains know right where to take you. You can go for a half day or full day. They do the work, and all you have to do is catch that “big one”! If you don’t have any equipment, don’t worry. They have plenty. They’ll also fillet and package your catch for you! All you have to do is take it home and cook it.

Saltwater fishing isn’t the only fishing available to potential anglers. Many ponds on Cape Cod are restocked in the spring. Among the many fish found in these ponds are rainbow trout, brown trout, pickerel, perch, black bass and pike. You will need to get a fishing license from the local town hall to freshwater fish.

Cape Cod can basically be divided into several sections for fishing. If you are on the bayside, then you might want to check out Wellfleet Harbor and Sandy Neck. Point of Rocks Beach, Chapin Beach, and Barnstable Harbor all offer areas for fishing.

Located along the west side of Cape Cod is Buzzards Bay. You can visit Old Silver Beach, Wings Neck, and Woods Hole on this section of Cape Cod. Try fishing on both sides of the Cape Cod Canal. You can choose from the mainland side or the cape side, and you may have luck in either place.

Many charter boats leave Stage Harbor and head to Monomoy for great fishing. The Cape Cod National Sea Shore isn’t just for strolling. Fishing opportunities abound along this scenic stretch of coastline. Potential anglers have their choice of the Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Beach, Pamet Beach, and Race Point.

Be sure to work your way around the island to the south side beaches. These include West Dennis Beach, South Cape Beach, Craigville Beach, and Dowses Beach. There are also some saltwater rivers that feed into the ocean. Bass River has a fishing pier, and you might just snag that perfect sea bass. Jetties provide a good harbor for many fish at Herring River. You can also branch out from the Cape and explore more fishing opportunities at Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or just a tourist looking to experience all that Cape Cod has to offer, you won’t be disappointed. Cape Cod is a beautiful treasure just waiting to be explored.
