Create a distinctive Christmas tree with a three-color theme.

Limit the main colors on your Christmas tree to three for a cohesive and fun design. Monochromatic trees can be limiting and overly formal in design while trees with unlimited color selections may look frenetic.

When selecting the color scheme for your tree, first consider the colors you like and colors that look the best with the décor in your home. Some of the other items may offer inspiration for holiday color choices:

- A favorite ornament or holiday decoration.

- A piece of fabric, for example a holiday throw blanket or pillow.

- Colors from a beautiful wide ribbon that you use as a garland

Also, consider any ornament selections or theme you would like to use for the tree. A wine theme could inspire deep purple, green and harvest gold while an ice castle theme would beg for white, silver and icy pale blue.

Another way to select three tones is to pick two hues and combine them with a metallic tone. Almost any two colors of similar depth will work together when combined with attractive gold or silver. For example, combine red and blue with silver or shimmering gold with purple and magenta.

While there are endless possibilities for color combinations, try one of these three-color Christmas trees to get started:

Classic Red, Green and White

These holiday favorites have withstood the test of time for a reason. Red, green and white are festive and fun together. Pick some of your classic ornaments and fill in with new ones to keep your tree in this color theme.

Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire

Jewel tones are rich and vibrant, evoking warm feelings of holiday spirit. The warm red of ruby ornaments will balance the cool tones of the emerald and sapphire decorations as long as they are of similar color saturations.

Pink, Baby Blue and Pale Yellow

If light and pretty colors appeal to you, combine icy pastel tones for a soft and shimmering tree. Soft pink combined with a baby blue and pale lemon yellow makes a stark contrast against the deep green of a pine tree.

Dark-Medium-Light

Select any color and use three varying tones of it on your tree. In order to avoid a monochromatic feel, the hues must be distinctly different, for example an indigo blue, a medium royal blue and an icy winter blue. Maroon sets off bright red and pink ornaments beautifully and shades of purple ranging from deep to lavender are stunning.

Royal Velvet: Red, Purple and Gold

Decorate a tree fit for a king with this elegant three-color scheme. Deep red, and rich purple combine with metallic gold to make vibrant and lush Christmas designs. Use velvety soft fabric ribbons for garlands and combine shimmering translucent crystal ornaments with velvet fabric ornaments embroidered in sophisticated gold.

Metallic Glory

Combine three metallic tones to create a shimmering tree. Yellow gold, silver and copper can be used together to make a tree sure to shine. Use a variety of textures, finishes and sizes to keep the look lively.
