Making Christmas tree ornaments is a fun family thing to do. Some parents strive to make a new type of ornament with their kids each year so that they can mark each passing holiday. The following craft is fun to do with smaller kids before it does not involve a lot of skill. The result is a set of beautiful ornaments that would look fabulous on any tree.
To start this craft, blow up a bunch of small balloons. These balloons should not be bigger than a large man’s hand. You can find small balloon in grocery stores or craft stores, but if you cannot find the, use regular balloons. Do not inflate the regular balloons fully. Make sure each person making these ornaments has at least two small balloons.
Next, make this concoction out of glue and water. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine two parts of glue with one part of water. Now add a lot of glitter to the glue mixture and mix it thoroughly so that the glitter is spread evenly throughout the glue. Remember to clean this mixing bowl promptly after you are finished making this craft, as dried glue can be very difficult to remove from certain surfaces!
Next, take approximately two feet of string (for each balloon) and saturate the string in the glittery glue mixture. Then take this string and start wrapping it around the balloon so that it overlaps itself many times. You do not need to wrap it in a distinct pattern, but simply make sure that the string does crisscross.
Bring out a sheet of wax paper and lay all of the balloons on the wax paper. Let them dry for at least a day. You will know when they are dry because the string will be hard to the touch. Take a needle and pop the balloon once all the glue is dry. Slowly peel away all parts of the popped balloon from the string. You will see how the string still retains its shape! When you remove all of the balloon pieces, you will see the beauty of your new globular ornament. Try using different colors of string for different members of your family so that you can remember who made which ornament.
You can hang this ornament from the Christmas tree with a ribbon and leave the ornament just how it is. You can also embellish the ornament with additional decoration. To do this, string beads onto short lengths of string and secure them by tying a knot at the end of the string. Then attach these beaded strings to your ornament by tying them to other parts of string. You can also do only one string and hang it from the very bottom of the ornament for a simpler look. Attach ornament hooks to your new ornaments to hang them to a Christmas tree branch, or use ribbon to attach them. Enjoy making a variety of beautiful ornaments to hang on your tree and enjoy spending quality time with your family while crafting!
