The type of glue you choose for your craft project or repair job is important. Certain types of adhesive are made specifically for certain types of projects and materials. Using the wrong adhesive can be a disaster, so be sure you choose the right adhesive for your particular project.
First of all, it’s helpful to understand how adhesives work. Glue works by either chemically bonding materials or by mechanically bonding them together. A chemical bond is achieved when the molecules in an object connect with the molecules in adhesive. This is the bond most often created using non-porous materials like glass, ceramics, and other hard objects. A mechanical bond is formed when adhesive is absorbed into the cracks and crevices of porous materials such as wood, paper, cardboard, and other soft items.
Super glue is very popular because it bonds in a matter of seconds and does an efficient job of repairing broken items. It’s best suited for use on glass, ceramic, plastic, and metal objects. Because it does such a good job of bonding, it is not recommended that children use it without adult supervision. Super glue can be removed from skin with acetone, which is otherwise known as nail polish remover. This type of glue should be stored with a pin in the opening to keep it from bonding permanently shut and becoming unusable.
Standard two-part epoxy is efficient for bonding non-porous materials together. These types of epoxy can be used with wood, but it is recommended that they be used as reinforcement after using glue manufactured specifically for wood. Some two-part epoxies contain additives so they will bond various types of metal. Two-part epoxy consists of resin and hardener, and work when the two parts are combined. This enables them to last a long time on the shelf before being mixed. The bond achieved is usually very strong and long lasting.
One-part epoxy is easier to use because there is no mixing involved. It works because of a chemical reaction caused by heat, and it provides a strong, long lasting bond. Professionals generally use these types of epoxy because they are very easy to work with, and they bond items quickly.
Another type of epoxy adhesive comes in the form of putty. It acquires its adhesive property after two separate parts are kneaded together. This type of epoxy is convenient to use when messier gel-type epoxies aren’t right for a project.
Wood glue is typically cream colored or yellow. It is used specifically for wood products, but it also works well on porous objects such as material and paper. This type of glue contains aliphatic resin, which is more commonly referred to as “AR”. Wood glue is not waterproof, so it is not recommended for outside use.
Polyurethane glue is also recommended for use with wood. It does not dry as quickly as typical wood glue, so it’s better to use if repositioning becomes necessary. This type of glue tends to foam as it dries, but the foam can easily be cleaned from the surface of the object it has been used on. Don’t expect polyurethane glue to remain good beyond a year. It has a shorter shelf life than most adhesives.
Craft glue is made specifically for lightweight, porous craft materials. Craft glue that is considered “thick” will work best with, most projects. Don’t mistake regular white school glue for craft glue. It’s much thinner, and it is best used for paper projects. Craft glue can take up to 24 hours to properly dry so take this into consideration before choosing it for your craft needs.
Hot glue works well for craft projects that won’t hold together with typical craft glue or basic white glue. It dries very quickly and has a strong hold on most porous surfaces as well on some non-porous surfaces. Use caution when working with high-temperature hot glue guns. They can cause severe burns when not used properly. Children should always be supervised while using a hot glue gun. There are lower temperature glue guns that also do a wonderful job of holding craft projects together. They are the safer choice for children’s craft projects.
Before deciding to use any type of adhesive, read product labels to fully understand suggested uses and precautions. Most adhesive products are clearly marked with complete directions as well as any possible dangers associated with their use. Always remember to keep any adhesives out of reach of small children and pets.
