Fans already know that throughout the five seasons of the Sailor Moon television show, Serena and her friends make dozens of different appearances, both exotic and mundane, from schoolgirls to moon goddesses. If you have bought or made a set of Sailor Moon paper dolls for yourself or your kids, there is no end to the scenarios you can place them in.
A few more outfits for your dolls will make things exciting and fun. Using white paper and whatever writing and coloring utensils you have, create some new fashions for the dolls to sport on their adventures. Here are some suggestions:
School
Serena and most of the other Scouts are in junior high or high school during the series. In Japan, where they live, the culture promotes teamwork and fitting in, rather than individuality. This is why school uniforms are standard in Japanese schools, and the most popular design is the "sailor fuku." This combination of pleated skirt and top with a scarf or bow on the front is actually what the Sailor Scout uniforms in the show are based on.
Serena, Amy and Lita all go to the same school (though Lita still wears the fuku belonging to her old school, since they didn't have a uniform to fit her). One scenario you could make up with dolls is a time when they are in school or on their way home, and you can make them outfits out of paper if you haven't already done so. Or you could try dressing them in each others' school uniforms, just to see how they look!
Karaoke
In Japan, everyone loves karaoke, and the girls in the Sailor Moon series are no exception! They often talk about wanting to be idols, so making glamorous outfits is the first step on that road. Many American fashions, both past and present, appear in Japanese trends - cowboy hats and boots, berets, lace, jewelry and more. Be creative! Set the stage for karaoke using whatever materials you have handy, but a flashlight would be especially useful. Shine the light on your character, play some music, and sing along!
Princesses
In the comic version, all of the Scouts are princesses of their planets, and of course Sailor Moon is the Moon Princess. Ball gowns are standard fare, along with long gloves and heeled shoes to complete the outfit. During the series the girls occasionally go to dances or concerts in formal outfits, giving you even more opportunities! Arrange a ball or a banquet and dress your dolls up for the occasion, bringing along or creating some boys for them to dance with. A party isn't complete without Tuxedo Mask!
On the Town
One of the main topics of discussion among junior high girls is dating. Ever wanted to see Mina and Darien together? This is just the way to do it! Create an outfit that can be worn on a date or just for casual wear, from the show or from your own imagination. Some of the girls have clothing they wear all the time, such as Raye's priestess robes, or outfits that recur often. All but Lita like to wear skirts and summer dresses that are perfect for a date!
Sailor Scouts
Chances are if you have Sailor Moon paper dolls, you already have this outfit! The sailor uniform is what the Scouts wear in battle, and many scenarios can be created to go along with these outfits. Stage an attack by an enemy and have them transform into their fighting clothes - accompanied by glitter, bubbles or confetti if you have any handy!
It's up to you to create a story to go along with your fantasy, but remember that you are in control of the plot. Follow the canon perfectly, or make up your own world - you could even make a doll of yourself to add to the mix. Be creative and have fun!
