Cultures throughout the world celebrate spring as a renewal of life. This is particularly true for Christian Easter celebrations that commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter egg is symbolic for both secular and religious festivities because it represents the emergence of new life, whether from nature’s renewal after winter or Christ’s renewal through divine resurrection.

Easter eggs come in many varieties, from neon plastic to dyed, painted, and even encrusted with gold and jewels. Many people choose to decorate their own eggs, which provides Christians with many opportunities to express the celebration of Easter in a meaningful, symbolic way.

Christian Easter Egg Ideas: Symbolic Colors

The simplest Easter eggs are solid colors without any ornamentation. Natural dyes from berries, flowers, and other plants can be used, or commercial kits can be found for a rainbow of colors. While plain dyed eggs may appear simple at first, different colors can relay spiritual meanings to enhance the celebration. Green represents nature and the new growth of leaves and grass, renewal that occurs each spring. Yellow eggs are reminiscent of the glorious sunrise, bringing life to each new day. Purple is the traditional color of royalty and is a perfect shade to represent the divinity of Christ as King. Red eggs symbolize the blood of Christ that was spilled at His crucifixion, blood that He willingly gave to save men. Black traditionally symbolizes death, and can be used to represent all sins. White eggs, whether dyed a pure white or left uncolored, represent the light and purity of the Savior.

While simple colors can convey deep spiritual meanings, many people decorate Easter eggs with more elaborate designs. Drawings can be quite simple or painstakingly detailed, and can cover a wide range of Christian symbols.

Christian Easter Egg Ideas: Celebrating Christ

The celebration of Easter commemorates Christ’s death upon the cross, but Easter eggs can depict all the wonders of His life. This serves as a lesson to children and a reminder for adults about the life of Christ.

Manger: A manger image, perhaps complete with sheep or camels, can represent the birth of Christ.

Carpenter: To represent Christ’s occupation as a simple carpenter, images of a hammer, nails, saw, or wooden planks can be used.

Star of David: Depicting this sacred Jewish symbol reminds everyone that Jesus Christ was a religious man, honoring God and His wonders.

Wine: An image of grapes or a wine goblet represents Christ’s first miracle, turning the water into wine at the wedding at Cana.

Loaves and Fishes: One of the most recognizable miracles is how Christ made a meager five barley loaves and two fishes feed hundreds during the Passover feast. An Easter egg could be decorated with sprigs of barley, loaves of bread, or a pair of fish to symbolize this wonder.

Walking on Water: A foot on top of waves illustrates another miracle as Christ was able to walk on water because of his faith.

Eyes: Just as Christ encouraged His followers to have faith and be healed, so He encouraged the blind man to have faith to see again. An image of an eye symbolizes how faith opens our eyes to the wonders of God.

Israel: A simple outline of Israel illustrates the country where Jesus lived, and reminds believers, especially children, that it is a real place that still exists today.

Christian Easter Egg Ideas: The Easter Story

Many popular egg decorations include images of the Easter story. These images can be incorporated with other symbolic decorations, or used to teach young children the story in an interactive, imaginative way.

Palms: Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week, the last week of Jesus’s life. As He entered Jerusalem, His followers laid a path of palm fronds before Him, and an image of a palm tree or frond portrays the same image of welcome.

Maundy Thursday: This is the day of the Last Supper, which Jesus ate with his twelve disciples. A table with thirteen seated around it can be used to represent this event, as could a selection of bread and wine, which Jesus used for the Eucharist (Communion) with his followers.

Washing Feet: Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to show that He was a willing servant of His followers. This image can be conveyed by illustrating the feet or the water, accompanied by soap to be clear to young children.

Silver Coins: This image symbolizes the money Judas accepted to betray Christ, which led to the crucifixion.

Laurel Wreath: Jesus was convicted and sentenced to death by Roman rulers, who can be depicted with laurel wreaths or figures wearing togas.

Cross: Either a single cross or a trio of crosses can represent the actual crucifixion. When Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, two thieves were crucified with him, one on either side. If depicting a trio of crosses, the center cross should be larger or more elaborate to indicate that it was Christ’s cross.

Thorns or Nails: Jesus wore a crown of thorns upon the cross, and an image of thorns or nails can be additional symbols of His crucifixion.

Stone: After He was removed from the cross, His body was entombed in a cave and a large boulder was used to seal the entrance. A stone painted on the Easter egg or the entire egg dyed gray can represent this stone.

Resurrection: An image of the empty cave or a glorious sunrise can be used to represent the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday.

Christian Easter Egg Ideas: Personal Connections

Including personal touches along with religious symbolism on Easter egg decorations helps everyone feel connected to the celebrations honoring Jesus Christ. Children and adults alike can create eggs decorated with their own sins, indicating that Jesus died for everyone’s sins. A simple drawing of a church symbolizes the honor that is still paid to Jesus, and adds a personal touch to any Easter egg, especially if it resembles an individual’s church. A picture of a baptism shows the dedication of a person’s life to Christ and reminds everyone of that personal connection.

From simple colors to elaborate artwork, Christians have many ways to decorate Easter eggs that celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as well as sharing their personal connection to the Savior. By creating such meaningful decorations, far more will be found during an Easter egg hunt than simply colored eggs.
