When you're out on the golf course playing a game with your buddies, you can get an edge on the scores by using the fairway woods in your bag correctly. As its name implies, a fairway wood is designed to be used on the fairway of a golf course. A fairway wood has a hollow body. It differs from a driver golf club in that it has a smaller head. Contrary to their name, these clubs aren't made of wood any longer. Instead, the heads are manufactured using either a steel or a titanium alloy. Because of this, they are now sometimes referred to as being, "Metal Woods."

One advantage to the head of a fairway wood being made out of a light metal is that you can hit the ball with more force and more control. You can also get more distance with this golf club. They are designed specifically to hit a golf ball a long distance across the green. Because of this, some new golfers prefer to use a fairway wood instead of a driver club when they are teeing off. One or more of your fairway woods might be the most often used golf clubs in your bag.

Usually, the best fairway wood is a three wood or a five wood. You can use a four wood or even an eleven wood for the fairways, if you choose. The number one wood is the hardest to use because its extended length makes it harder to control the swing. Remember, the larger the number, the more height you're going to get. A three wood won't get you as much altitude as a four wood can, even though it's probably one of the longest clubs in your bag. A number five wood is even better yet. Just remember the rule of thumb that the higher number a golf club has, the higher its fly will be.

While a fairway wood is designed for your ball to get some distance across the green, it's imperative that you use it correctly so it can do its job right. So, the first step you need to take is to place your golf ball in the forward stance when you're teeing off. The reason for this is because a fairway wood is designed to hit the ball on the downswing.

Now that you have your golf ball in place, check the slope of the fairway (or other part of the green you are teeing off from). Place the desired fairway wood in between your hands, and stand so that your shoulders and your hips are aligned with the slope of the land. If the slope is up, then you should swing with your weight forward. Swing the golf club slightly to the right since the ball will have a tendency to go to the left.

If the fairway is on a downhill slope, you should change your strategy according to the lay of the land. Place your ball in the forward stance. Then, stand so that your shoulders and your hips are aligned with the downward slope. Swing the club with your weight forward, but swing it slightly to the left.
