A snow covered Christmas tree skirt is functional as well as festive. The glistening artificial snow looks lovely with holiday gifts mindfully decorated and carefully arranged. You can very easily create a beautiful snowy tree skirt to adorn the base of your Christmas tree.

For this project you will need 2 yards of white fleece fabric, sewing scissors, spray-on adhesive, white iridescent glitter, and tailor’s chalk. Optional supplies are pinking sheers, straight pins, metallic foil stars, and fabric glue.

Begin by laying the fabric right side up on the work surface. Fold it in half so the right side of the fabric is in the center. If you have something circular such as a rug, use it as a pattern to trace around. Fold the pattern in half, and line up the fold with the creased edge of the fleece. Make sure the edges are lined up as evenly as possible. Trace around the half circle with tailor’s chalk. If you do not have something to use as a pattern, draw a half circle as accurately and as neatly as possible. Tailor’s chalk brushes off easily, so don’t be concerned about making mistakes.

After drawing the half circle, carefully cut it out. When the fabric is unfolded you should have a perfect circular shape. Refold the circle in half, and locate the very center of the tree skirt by folding it one more time in the other direction. It should now be folded into quarters. After finding the center, mark it with tailor’s chalk. Unfold one side so it’s folded in half once again. Draw a half circle in the very center that will be large enough to accommodate the trunk of a Christmas tree. Carefully cut out the circle. Cut a slit from the circle to the outer edge of the tree skirt so it can easily be placed around the base of the tree.

Finish the tree skirt by covering the entire right side with a light coating of spray-on adhesive. Sprinkle iridescent white glitter over the entire surface. After several minutes, shake off any excess glitter. Allow the adhesive to dry completely before using the tree skirt.

To create a fancier version, cut out the tree skirt using pinking sheers, and do some additional handiwork with a sharp pair of straightedge scissors to create a giant snowflake. Fold the circle into quarters, and carefully fasten the outer sides with straight pins. Cut out notches and other shapes on the folds, just like you would when making a paper snowflake. The scissors must be sharp to cut through all layers of material. After cutting out all desired notches and shapes, remove the straight pins. While the tree skirt is still folded, cut the edges to create interesting scallops and other designs. Open the tree skirt to reveal a big beautiful snowflake. Cut out the slit and center circle as instructed previously. Finish the snowy tree skirt by spraying it with adhesive and applying iridescent glitter.

Decorate either version of the tree skirt further by attaching metallic foil stars with fabric glue. Randomly glue them on until the entire tree skirt is covered with shinning stars.

This snowy Christmas tree skirt would make a lovely gift for someone who enjoys a beautifully decorated holiday tree. Make several to give to family and friends. Keep in mind - it’s the thought that counts when exchanging gifts. Homemade Christmas gifts are some of the most thoughtful gifts of all.
