One of the best places in the United States to fish, either for sport or leisure, is in the Great Lakes state of Michigan. Not only are the five Great Lakes situated here, but Michigan also offers thousands of smaller, crystal clear lakes and rapid rivers that can be literally teeming with fish. This state offers fish by the multitude and boasts many varieties for the fisherman of every type and taste.

There are guided tours offered in many areas of Michigan. Guided tours are a great way to find the best fishing spots in unfamiliar territory. In Bay de Noc, for example, a bay of Lake Michigan which is situated between Escanaba and Manistique in the Upper Peninsula, guided tours are the best for finding walleye, northern pike, and perch. Guided fishing groups offer camaraderie and excitement when that big one you’ve been hoping for is at the end of your line, threatening to pull you in. These tours can also provide safety, especially when going out by boat into the waters of the tumultuous Lake Superior. This lake, famous for its ship wreaks, is best when someone familiar with its waters is accompanying you.

Some of the many varieties fish that swim in Michigan’s lakes are salmon, king and coho, perch, many species of trout, whitefish, walleye, steelheads, bass, and many more. In Lake Huron, walleye and northern, smallmouth, and lake perch are plentiful. Lake Michigan offers king and coho salmon, lake trout, and steelheads while Lake Superior has the best population of different species.

Going out into the smaller lakes will also make for a satisfying adventure. Study maps of the area that you wish to go and either rent or bring your own small boat. These lakes, especially in the Upper Peninsula are quiet, serene, and plentiful. Though the fish may be smaller than in the Great Lakes, your stringer will be full by the end of the day.

River fishing is also fun if you are adventurous enough. The best way to river fish is to hike a few miles away from everyone else. Also, find a spot where the water takes a rest and is shaded and deep. By finding the right spot, brook trout will be biting in no time and the hike will be very worthwhile.

Ice fishing has also become very popular in recent years. For the inexperienced, guided tours provide heated shanties where you can fish in relative comfort. In the winter, blue gills, walleye, and perch can be caught.

Smelting is also a fun way to fish and something that the locals have been doing for years. This event takes place during the early spring when rainbow trout smelt run to the mouths of streams and into the Great Lakes. With a large net and standing at the shore or in the shallows of the river, these appetizing little fish can be caught in the hundreds and are usually deep fried. If unfamiliar with smelting, it is very easy to learn.

The Great Lakes of Michigan can offer the fisherman his greatest wishes in fishing for that Big One he can hang up on his wall and brag about to his friends and no one will be disappointed at the end of their trip. It is a beautiful way to see a breathtaking state while doing what you love the most.
