When I had my little girl I wanted to make her hair as pretty as could be. I loved all of the pretty bows that were out for her hair but not all of them would work for her hair. A lot of the time I couldn’t find the bow that would match a particular outfit that she was to wear. I decided that I could make bows just for her hair, ones that would stay in her baby fine curls and ones that would match her numerous outfits.

One of the first problems that I had with hair bow for my little girl was that some of the nice frilly ones didn’t stay in her hair. Her hair was fine and they would just slide out. I did however find at our local everything store bows that used Velcro instead of the regular metal or plastic clasp that was normally used in bows. I thought that was a really great idea but the selection was very limited. All I would need to make a bow for her hair was some pretty ribbon, some glue and a little piece of Velcro.

Here is how you can make hair bows that fit you little girl even if she has really fine hair. Take some ribbon approximately 12 inches smaller if you want a smaller bow. Like it like you are going to tie you shoe lace for a small bow. Take the Velcro and cut off a piece approx 1 inch long. Sew one end of the Velcro together. Now glue the ribbon to the Velcro, you can even take a needle and thread and put a small stitch in the ribbon to the Velcro if you are unsure about the glue. I like to use a really good crafting or hot glue as they work the best.

If you want a fluffy bow take the ribbon and wrap it around three fingers, or you can use anything just make sure that you can get the ribbon off after it is wrapped, the more ribbon you use the fuller the bow will be, also the larger the item you wrap the ribbon around the larger the bow will be. Make sure that you keep the ribbon flat don’t let it roll around. After you have the right amount of ribbon wrapped around the item take the ribbon off and tie it off in the middle creating lots of pretty loops in the ribbon. I like to use a smaller ribbon of the same color for large ribbon bows and a thread of the same color for smaller ribbon bows. Fluff your bow and make it look like you want and then glue it to the Velcro.

If you want to use a different type of clip to hold the bow in the hair it is easy as well. As my daughter has gotten older I can use the larger clips, barrettes, or elastic holders. I make the bows just like I make them to put on the Velcro and attach them to the other barrettes. For elastic holders it is better to take a bit of thread and a needle and make some stitches around the elastic and through the bottom of the bow. Another great way to make an interesting bow is to use some beautiful lace or material. All you have to do is cut the material or lace into small strips that are easy to handle. They can be made into bows just like the ribbon.

To make great looking hair bows for a little girl can be fun and easy, and it lets you get creative. It can also save you a lot of money on those expensive bows or custom made ones. My little girl loves her bows and as she gets older helps me pick out the ribbons to use and will eventually be able to help me make the bows themselves.
