Becoming a ham radio operator can be an exciting hobby that you can enjoy right from the comfort of your own home! If you want to become a ham radio operator, and be able to contact people from all over the globe, you will need a license and your call sign from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and, of course, a radio. You can purchase a radio at your local electronics store, or, you can put together a ham radio kit yourself. As long as you have a basic knowledge of soldering wires together, and you can follow instructions, then you can build your own radio kit. You can purchase a radio kit at your local electronics store too, or, you can perform a search on the Internet to find one. Basically, your ham radio kit should include all of the parts and instructions that you'll need for this project.
When you get your kit home, the first step is to find a flat, clean work area that you can use without being disturbed. Your ham radio kit will contain many small parts, and you don't want them to get lost, destroyed, or to get in the hands of small children. If you're working on a table or countertop that you don't want marred, place an old piece of wood over the surface to protect it from hot solder, et cetera.
Then, carefully open the kit and sort out the parts according to the parts list. In order to organize the radio parts, you can place them in an egg carton or in another container that has compartments. Before you proceed onto the next step, make sure that your kit is complete and that you have everything you need. If not, contact the manufacturer and request that they send you the missing parts.
Nearly every electronics project begins with a base. The base in most cases is a hard, green plastic circuit board. The circuit board in your ham radio kit should have everything clearly labeled so you will know where to install the parts. Locate the base in your kit, and then refer to the owner's manual to find out where to begin.
As with any other kit you put together, assembling it is simply finding the proper part and installing it in the right place. Be sure that you take your time and read the owner's manual carefully in order to install the parts correctly.
Soldering the wires together properly is another requirement when it comes to an electronics project like a ham radio kit. If the soldering is not done correctly, one or more parts may not work right. This, in turn, can cause the entire ham radio to not work properly, or at all. Be sure that you heat up the two connections that are going to be soldered together. Plus, use a suitable type of solder, and keep the tip of your soldering gun cleaned off.
Once your kit is assembled, you should have a ham radio in front of you. There will probably be instructions in the owner's manual on how you can test your new radio to make sure it works properly. If you want to extend the range that your radio can reach, you can purchase a bigger, more powerful antenna and hook it up to that. As you learn how to properly use your new radio, you may want to upgrade it, if you can, on down the road. Or, you may choose to buy a bigger, more powerful radio that can handle more frequencies.
Finally, remember to follow the rules of courtesy when you are using your ham radio. Also, follow any laws of the Federal Communications Commission as they pertain to the operation of your ham radio.
