Have you ever designed a room in your house to fit a certain style, but then could not find any accessory pieces to fit this style? Perhaps you should consider creating your own accessory! Making your own homemade collage art vase is simple and inexpensive, and lets you have complete control over your decorating. To make this project, have the following items on hand:
Vase
Magazines
Fabric
Decoupage glue
Sponge paintbrush
Step One: Choosing the right vase.
It is important to choose a vase with a wide opening for this project, because you will need to reach inside the vase to decorate it. Consider a square shaped vase or perhaps one with an upside-down cone shape. You will more than likely be able to find a vase that fits your taste and will still work for this project.
Step Two: Pick out your art!
Cut out pictures from magazines that you would like to use on your vase. These can be picturesque scenes, words, people, and so on. You have creative freedom over this portion of the craft, so use it! You can also choose pieces of fabric if you do not want to use cutouts, but make sure the fabric isn’t very thick or else it will not stick to the vase.
Step Three: Design in your mind.
Using the pieces of magazine art or fabric, create in your mind an image of what you would like your vase to look like. This helps in the actual creation of the design. It is better to plan ahead than to ruin a project!
Step Four: Application.
Apply a thin coat of decoupage glue, such as Modge Podge, to the inside of the vase using a sponge or foam paintbrush. Then, start applying the magazine images or fabric. Remember that the side you want to show should be the side facing the outside of the vase. You will not be able to see the inside of the vase once you are done. You may want to work in small sections while doing this portion, as the decoupage glue dries quickly.
Step Five: Second application.
Apply another coat of decoupage glue to the back of the magazine fabric to make sure the edges do not lift or become saturated with water when you actually use the vase. You may want to apply more than one coat of decoupage glue on the back of the decorative pieces.
Step Six: Drying.
Let the vase dry completely before using it. Once it is dry, you can use it as you would any other vase. You can add to the vase by decorating the outside of it, as well. This can be done with strips of fabric, rhinestones, glitter, silk flowers, and so on. Use leftover materials from decorating the rest of your room to truly make your vase match your style. This craft also works on the back of glass plates, and most other glass surfaces. Do not use this crafting technique if the item you wish to decorate will come in contact with heat.
