Every little girl would love to sleep in a fairytale room. It’s easy to make that dream come true, and create a fairy-themed bedroom for your little girl with the following tips.

Before you begin, sit down with your daughter (if she’s old enough), and ask her what she would like to see in her room. She might surprise you with some ideas you never even imagined. For instance, she might like to have a Tinkerbell-themed room instead of just generic fairies or she might want the walls painted purple instead of pink. Just go keep asking her questions, because you might eventually hit upon the perfect idea.

Once you have some input from your daughter, it’s time to make a thematic plan. The plan will help you gather your thoughts, and hopefully save you time and money. You should do some research about what fairy-themed merchandise is already available. Also, check books and the Internet for thematic ideas, color schemes, fairy art, etc.

Here are some other things to consider:

Color scheme: Most people associate the color pink with fairies. Little girls also tend to favor the color. However, you don’t need to limit yourself to just this color. Fairies were traditionally forest dwellers, so consider woodland colors (greens and browns) as a backdrop to the bright colors of the fairies themselves. The fairies also don’t need to be colored solely in pastels. Think about using fuchsia or teal for a lively color scheme. You can find your entire color scheme easily by choosing colors from a rug, a piece of art or a ready-made collection.

Décor: One of the secrets to a great, pulled together room is to find an object or rug you love, and then use its colors for the room. It’s a lot easier to match paint and bedding to these objects than the other way around. You’ll want artwork for the walls. Look for framed art or make your own from paintings your daughter creates. Also consider stick-on decals or sculptural artwork. Next, consider the floor. If you can’t find a fairy rug, look for one in colors you want to highlight in the room. Then, add a fairy appliqué in the corner of the rug. You can also use paint to stencil fairies on your floors if they are bare.

Walls: Paint gives you so many decorating possibilities. Add in stencils and wallpaper, and the choices can seem overwhelming. However, once you have a color scheme in place, it’s easy to choose paint colors. For the main wall color, try to pull an accent color from a bedspread, rug, or piece of art. Consider painting the trim a secondary color that you also choose from your source of inspiration. This will tie the room together well, and make it easier to choose a color. As for wallpaper and stencils, find ones you and your daughter love while also going for something easy to use. For example, you can get a fun look by painting the walls pale blue. Then, bring in small artificial trees. Fasten the trees to the wall with drywall screws, and cover them with Christmas lights (multi-colored or white are both fine). Voila – fairy lights! Then, stencil fairies flying in and out of the trees. This is an inexpensive way to liven up the walls, and create a fairy-filled woodland.

Furniture: The bed will obviously be a main focal point. Most young girls are attracted to canopy beds. These beds can help create a sense of sleeping in the fairy grotto if you dress up the posts with more small trees and hang the canopy with airy sheers. For fun, try stenciling fairies on sheer fabric with translucent paints to create a stained glass effect overhead. You can also paint mismatched furniture all one color. Then, use stencils to create the sense that the pieces are part of a matching set.

Bedding, pillows and curtains: If you don’t have a matching, fairy-themed set or you can’t find one you like, create your own with fabric paint and stencils. You can also use stencils to create an outline for embroidery or appliqué on pillows, sheets, coverlets and curtains. Fabric colors should compliment the color scheme you’ve chosen. Match the bedding, pillows and curtains to the main artwork or rug you have chosen for you color scheme inspiration.

Lighting: For a fun look, you can paint fairies onto fabric lampshades with stencils. Also, don’t overlook a glass overhead fixture. With glass paint, you can cover the whole thing with a lovely stained glass fairy or just accent the shade with a small fairy to add some color to the ceiling.

With a little bit of time and input from your daughter, you’re sure to create the fairy-themed bedroom of her dreams. Just remember to create a plan to help make things go smoothly, and have fun putting it all together.
