Wallpaper lizards are easy to make and fun for little kids to play with or hang around their room. Although it may sound strange to have extra wallpaper just hiding around the house, stores often offer free wallpapers samples. Also, stores will donate wallpaper sample booklets to schools for use in arts and craft projects. One sheet of wallpaper per child will be suitable for this project. In addition to the wallpaper, you will need glue, scissors, red felt, and craft eyes. All of these items can be found at local craft stores for relatively inexpensive prices.
The main body portion of the lizard will require the biggest piece of wallpaper. Try to find a wallpaper style that looks somewhat like the texture of a lizard. This could be green, brown, textured…anything that you think resembles a creepy, crawly lizard! Take the first piece of wallpaper and roll it into a cone, and then flatten this cone. Glue the edges of the flattened cone together so that the body looks like a triangle. When the glue has dried, fold the cone/triangle shape in the other direction so that the body puffs out and becomes three dimensional. This should essentially look like a cone but with a diamond-shaped opening at the bottom of the cone instead of a circle. It is very close to a pyramid shape, but not quite! Fold the body back into the original position. Use a pair of scissors to cut along the folded portion at the top so that the body looks like it is spiked. Curve the body portion of the lizard so that the spikes stick out.
Now that you have made the main body portion of the lizard, you will need to make two legs and two arms. Cut these shapes from the wallpaper and simply glue them to the bottom portion of the lizard. They will be flat, but this will help to keep the lizard stable. Attach the feat closer to the pointed cone end of the main body and the arm closer to the open end of the cone. The open end of the cone will serve as the open mouth of the lizard. Cut out a piece of red felt to use for the tongue and glue this inside of the open mouth of the lizard. Then, attach two craft eyes to the top of the lizard’s head. You have now created your very own wallpaper lizard! You can also try to make frogs and snakes using the same methods detailed above.
Some children like to wear these lizards, and you can make them wearable by adding an arm strap to the bottom of the lizard. Cut a long rectangle out of felt. Make sure it is long enough to wrap around your wrist or forearm. Next, glue this felt strip into a circle and then glue the circle to the bottom of the lizard. Let the glue dry. Now you can wear in style one brand new wallpaper lizard!
