Hemp is a plant from the Cannabis genus that is growing in popularity because it can be used for so many things. Industrial hemp can be used for thousands of things, such as hemp seed oil, clothes or even paper. Try making a necklace out of some hemp and see for yourself how versatile it is. Follow these steps to make a hemp necklace--a great gift for friends.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Preparation

Step1
Measure the length around your neck and multiply it by twelve.
Step2
Cut a strand of that length from a ball of hemp twine.
Step3
Repeat this process to make another strand of equal length.
Step4
Fold the two strands in the middle over your left index finger.
Step5
Make an overhand knot.

Making the Necklace

Step1
Secure the loop of the knot under a heavy object like a table or chair leg, which will hold them in place as you tug on the four free strands.
Step2
Separate the four free strands into three sections, with a single strand on the left, a single strand on the right and two strands in the middle.
Step3
Take the left strand and pull it diagonally to the left. Using a finger of the left hand to hold it in place, create a figure four (4) by laying the end of the strand across the two middle strands.
Step4
Take the right strand and lay it over top of the left strand and to the right of the middle strands. Pull this same strand under the point at which the other two sections meet and through the center of the figure four.
Step5
Pull the left strand taut with the right hand and the right strand taut with the left hand (making sure the center section stays taut the entire time). This will make a knot just below the knot that holds the two strands together.
Step6
Repeat, always beginning with the strand that is now on the left.

Tying Off

Step1
Repeat this process until the necklace is as long as you want it to be.
Step2
Make a knot at the end of the necklace to hold all the strands in place.
Step3
Divide the strands so that there are two sections of two strands. Make a knot in each of these sections about 1½ inches below the bottom knot.
Step4
Cut off the remaining free strands from the two knotted sections.
Step5
Use these two knotted sections and the initial loop to tie the necklace around the neck.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you think you made a mistake don't worry. You can pull the knots apart to undo them and start over.
  • If you run short on string, you can tie additional pieces to the ends of the strands in the necklace and keep going.

on 6/6/2008 You can also secure the loop of the knot by pinning it on a notice board or tear up a card board box, placing it either on a table or your lap.

on 8/30/2006 There are two ways to make a hemp necklace-try a spiral and a straight. You can even switch both back and forth to make an awesome design. Also try incorporating beads and other items into your necklace to make it yours.

on 8/10/2006 Light a candle and let the wax melt. Dip the ends of the hemp in it for easy beading.
