Imagine how relaxing it would be to come home from a hectic day at work to enter your own backyard and hear the sound of babbling water flowing from a beautiful fountain that you had created. An outdoor garden water fountain can have such a wonderful psychological effect on your mood. There is nothing more soothing than feeling cool water on your skin and hearing the tranquil sound of the water as it moves through your garden.

Your fountain can be whatever you imagine it to be. Fountains come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. It can be a beautiful piece of art hanging on a wall with a stream of water trickling from it, or it can be a fiberglass pond surrounded by a beautiful array of plants. If you decide to use containers, you can use clap pots, jugs, or art creations - just to name a few. Your fountain can show a true expression of you.

When installing your fountain keep in mind that a fountain with stagnant water is not recommended because mosquitoes will be drawn to it. I would recommend that you include moving water when you design your fountain.

Once you have decided on the location and design of your new fountain, if you have determined that you will have flowing water, you will need to determine which pieces you want to be at the top, bottom, and middle. Your flowing water fountain will rely on a pump to keep the water circulating. The water goes through plastic tubing and is released into the fountain. It flows to the bottom and is pumped back up the tube again. The pump will be located at the bottom section where the water returns, the top section will be a where the water will emerge, and the water course will flow through the middle section.

Your next decision will be what size pump to purchase. Once you begin looking, you will find a wide variety of pumps ranging from 35 gallons per hour to over 600 gallons per hour. Be sure to check the maximum lift figure so that you will know how high the water will be lifted. Be sure to purchase an appropriate pump and lift that will suit your project. Most pumps run on electrical connections or batteries (for smaller versions). You may also want to check into a solar unit that requires no electrical hookup.

After all is working with your pond, a nice selection of aquatic plants would look great. They not only look great but they help to keep your garden pond clean. Something else you may consider is to stock your new pond with fish. Two suggested types of fish are goldfish and koi.

Overall looking at your beautiful new outdoor garden water fountain will give you a great feeling of pride to know that you did it yourself. With the money you saved by doing it yourself, you will be able to do start that next project. I hope you enjoy your new fountain and have the satisfaction of knowing that you made it yourself.
