The sport of Handball is basically played on a court with a rubber ball that is two inches in diameter. It can be played with two or four players who take turns palming and bouncing the ball against the wall they are facing. The first player or team to reach a score of twenty one wins the game. A second game is then played, and a tie breaker follows, if necessary.
Like most sports, Handball is a physically demanding sport. Many men and women participate in sports like Golf, Running, Cycling, Swimming, and Handball to help get their bodies in shape. Ironically, a person's body should be in relatively good physical shape before they get involved with sports on a regular basis. If you are overweight, use tobacco products, or have long term health problems, you should consult with your doctor or your healthcare professional before you begin playing sports. Otherwise, you can play any sport you like. But the smartest and most successful Handball players are the ones who follow an established training plan with exercises.
Before every game, you need to perform a pre-game warm up routine. The best routine for you is a series of exercises that will stretch and warm up your muscles. These movements should be geared towards your present physical condition. That means, that, if you're not up to it, then you shouldn't try to do a hundred leg stretches right off the bat.
These exercises and stretches should prepare your body physically for the game ahead. Afterall, according to the statistics, most injuries that are received in Handball are caused because players have failed to stretch and exercise prior to a game. The most common injuries are muscle strains and sprains.
An example of a pre-game warm up might be: Several Arm, Back, Leg, Hand, and Neck Stretches- however many you are comfortable with- followed by Ten Toe Touches, Ten Arm Whirls, Ten Head Rotations, Ten Right Leg Lifts, Ten Left Leg Lifts, and Ten Knee Bends. If you feel like doing a higher or lower number of these exercises, feel free! Just remember not to overdue it! Injured people don't make good Handball players!
By performing a routine such as this example, your entire body- your head, neck, back, shoulders and legs- have been exercised and warmed up, and they are now ready for some physically demanding action on the court.
Then, after the games, you'll need to relax your body and allow it to cool down for fifteen minutes or so before you hit the refreshing showers. Some players choose to sit in a sauna room or in a hot tub for awhile first.
But, your training plan can't stop there! If you want to be a competitive, energetic Handball player, then your training plan and exercises must extend beyond the court. Granted, playing Handball can help you to burn calories and tone up your muscles, but you must train for this sport when you're not on the court too!
Besides performing strength training and muscle stretching exercises, you can also become involved in Running, Swimming, and Cycling. These sports will not only help you build endurance, but they are also great for toning your muscles! Aerobic exercises will also help to get your body in its best physical condition possible.
