Generally, they will contact a third party and that third party is a licensed real estate appraiser. They can get in contact with them in numerous ways. They can ask the mortgage professional that they are dealing with if they know a reputable real estate appraiser. If not, they can ask a friend or family member that has used one in the past and then contact them and let them know what their intentions are; either purchasing the home or refinancing it. Then that licensed professional will go out and appraise the home and the home owner will get a copy and so will the mortgage professional.
