Home Buyers Guide: Identifying Hidden Costs Of A New Home

This article will give readers some perspective on the hidden costs of buying a home.

Ahh, buying a new home; what a wonderful time in your life! It is very exciting to finally become a homeowner, and stop paying rent to a landlord. Finally, you can put some of that monthly money back into your own pocket, in the form of equity!

Of course, becoming a homeowner has its own costs. You had to pay for closing costs, and most likely a pretty decent down payment. It's hard enough coming up with that money, but then you will probably realize after you move in that there are going to be even more costs that you didn't even think of when you decided to buy.

Unless you build your own home from scratch, there will likely be many things about the house that you do not like; it may not be your taste. For example, the wallpaper is so 70's, you hate carpets in bedrooms. These are going to be some hidden costs in buying a new home. Evidently, when most people buy a new house, they usually do change the floors. A lot of people will change the carpeting to hardwood floors, or they may just change the carpeting to a new color, or just to a new carpet for cleansing reasons. Perhaps the old carpet had a lot of stains on it, and now you want a fresh one.

Also, you may want to do some interior decorating with the walls. As aforementioned, maybe the people before you had hideous wallpaper, and now you want to change the wallpaper to something you will like, or maybe you will just want to change it to painted walls, instead of wallpapered walls.

If you were renting before you bought the house, you will most likely now have a lawn, which means that you need to buy a lot of instruments for your new lawn. These include but are not limited to: a hoe, a rake, a shovel, a lawnmower, a weed-wacker, weed-killer, etc. Your lawn will now demand your attention. If you are not used to having a lawn, it is somewhat of a big change from your apartment when you did not have to take care of any plants/yard.

Also, if you are moving into a substantially larger place than you used to live in, you will of course want to fill in all of that space that you now have. If you had 1 bedroom before, and now you have four, you will of course want to go out and buy beds and dressers and whatever else for those new rooms.

Sometimes the people who lived in your house before you will try to settle with you on what you want fixed. There is an inspection before you move in, and the inspector will tell you everything that is "wrong" with the house. Sometimes the seller will fix all of these things, and sometimes they will not. Unfortunately, once you move in, it is your responsibility to fix all things that are broken. It's a much different sort of lifestyle than apartment living.

You also may not be used to having a washer and dryer- some apartments do not have these, and if you lived in an apartment before the house, you might need to go out and buy a washer and dryer.

Even though there may be some unexpected costs when you move into your new house, it is still a very exciting and fun time. Have fun decorating!
