Home Decor Ideas Make Your Own Christmas Decorations

Ideas for festive Christmas decorations you can easily make yourself.

Preparing your house for the Christmas holiday does not have to be expensive and you do not need a designer. Make your own decorations for a beautiful home and a festive holiday season.

No-sew fabric decorations

Even if you do not sew, you can use festive fabric and ribbon to adorn your home for the holidays. When you visit your local fabric or craft store, check the remnant table for small, inexpensive pieces of fabric. After the holidays, pick up festive Christmas prints on sale for the following year.

You do not have to buy a custom tree skirt; simply drape a large piece of fabric around the base of the tree. Holiday fabric can also be used to make a table runner or decorative throws; to hem the edges without sewing, use iron-on hem tape. Use a large piece of festively toned organza over a white tablecloth to add a holiday flair to the dining room.

Wide, wired ribbon can be used to create garlands. Wrap it around stair rails, tack it over mantles and around doorways. Drape shimmering ribbon through tree branches or gather it in attractive displays on tabletops.

Centerpieces and table toppers

Use objects you already have or can purchase inexpensively to make stunning Christmas centerpieces or table displays. Place brightly colored glass balls in a tall, clear vase for a sparkling centerpiece. Or, fill a vase with fresh cranberries before filling it with water and using it to arrange evergreen branches and white blooms. A thick pillar candle takes on new life when you place it on a silver tray and surround it with clear red and green glass stones. Cover a tray with glittery silver sand and group tea lights on it for a low-key festive look. Around the house fill decorative bowls with festive plants like poinsettias.

Wreaths

While decorated wreaths can be pricey, it is easy to decorate your own. Buy a wreath form at a local craft store or get a fresh, undecorated, evergreen wreath at a local home improvement store. Use floral wire and a glue gun to attach ornaments, floral accents and ribbon to your wreath for a traditional look. For a more modern look, use a glue gun to cover the surface of a wreath form with crystal beads in one or two tones.

Homemade tree ornaments

The possibilities are endless for the fun ornaments you can make for your tree. Homemade modeling dough can be used to sculpt any Christmas shape; paint these charming ornaments with acrylic craft paint. Felt fabric can be easily cut into Christmas trees, stars, stockings and other holiday shapes; to adorn them, glue on pieces of felt, ribbon, buttons, sequins and feathers. With only paper and scissors, you can cut beautiful paper snowflakes that can be hung from the tree or ceiling; even the kids can help make these ornaments for a fun family activity. Turn upside-down wooden clothespins into reindeer with the addition of googly eyes and tiny pom-pom noses or hand paint tiny wooden picture frames with Christmas motifs and put pictures of your family members in them.
