Having recently remodeled my old twenty-five year old bathroom, I can tell you that it was a pretty expensive project. Had my husband and I not done the work ourselves, the cost would have been even incredibly higher.

We started by replacing the bathtub. The old bathtub was a one piece fiberglass bathtub with a wall surround attached. To remove this we had to tear out drywall and cut the bathtub up to get it out of the bathroom. The price for a new three piece fiberglass bathtub was five hundred dollars.

In order to make the new bathtub work we had to do some plumbing adjustments and we had to purchase the fixtures for the bathtub. The cost of all of this was one hundred twenty dollars. When purchasing a bathtub, make sure you know if your plumbing is on the right or the left side and purchase the appropriate bathtub for your home. Do your homework before you buy. Make sure you get all of your measurements from your old bathtub before buying your new bathtub. We had to move all of our plumbing pipes up at least seven inches because we thought all bathtubs were the same height and they weren’t. If you buy one that matches the height of your tub you won’t have the extra plumbing work to do. This took extra time and money that we hadn’t planned on spending on this project.

Once the bathtub was finished we removed the old vanity, sink, medicine cabinet and commode. The cost for the new vanity was ninety dollars, the sink was eighty dollars, the medicine cabinet was eighty eight dollars and the commode was one hundred dollars.

With the bathroom empty we laid a new vinyl floor. The new floor cost seventy five dollars. I found a kit made by a floor manufacturer to help make a template on my floor. After making this template I applied it to my piece of vinyl and used the cutter that was in this kit. The kit cost ten dollars and was worth every bit of it.

New drywall had to be hung. When that was finished a primer and a coat of paint was applied. A border was also applied. The total cost for this was eighty dollars.

Next the vanity was installed with a new sink top mounted to the top. New fixtures were installed including new plumbing pieces. The cost of this was one hundred ten dollars.

A new lighting system was installed. This will require some electrical experience. Make sure the power is cut off before you start. The cost of this was thirty dollars. Other costs include finishing items like towel holders, bathroom paper holders, soap dishes, etc. This totaled sixty dollars. New vent covers were installed. The cost of the vent cover was ten dollars.

Make sure you seal everything properly to prevent any leakage. Total for our job was one thousand three hundred fifty three dollars. Overall looking at the beautiful new bathroom it was worth it for us to do it ourselves. With the money we saved by doing it ourselves, we will be able to do other projects.
