Choosing the best screen door for your particular style of home can make a huge difference in your home’s appearance.

One basic rule of thumb is that a full view screen door with replaceable glass always looks fabulous. Some do not choose this type of design for security reasons; they just don’t feel as safe with a screen from top to bottom of their door. But there is nothing like having the fresh outside air coming in through a full screen door.

Full view doors are quite common in developments and cul-de-sacs. The larger homes, such as Colonials, Garrisons, and Salt Box style, utilize the full view door to keep their home’s front looking as simple and neat as possible. By focusing on one point, such as a door, you tend to not see the full beauty. With a simple, neat door, your eyes tend to see all of the home instead of just the focal point of a door.

A slat wood based screen door poses as a much higher security risk than full view screen doors. Since the frame is made of thin strips of wood, it is very easy to break through by an unwanted intruder.

Another option if you are concerned about security is a half or partial screen door. The top half is screen while the bottom is usually crafted with metal or wood. Many of them have a glass top which simply slides down into the bottom metal portion of the door when it's not in use, making a quite easy transition between the colder and warmer months. This is a popular option for smaller footprint homes, such as a Cape Cod or Ranch style homes. This is because thee doors have always considered quaint, and so are these styles of homes.

Now that you have a general idea of what style of screen door you would like, the next decision is related to the color. It is amazing the colors that are out there now at your local hardware store or home improvement center. If it’s not an in-stock color, it can usually be ordered to suit your specifications.

White is always a classic color, as most trim on homes is white. You really can’t go wrong by choosing white as it matches everything.

If you want to go out on a limb and choose an actual color, there are a few color facts for you to keep in mind.

First, be sure to keep warm colors with warm colors and cool colors with cool colors. What this means is be careful of the color shades in which you choose. If your home’s front is bluish-gray, keep your screen door and shutters in the cool color category. Darker blue, burgundy (not rust) and darker purple tones will work well. If your home’s exterior is yellow, keep it within the warmer tones like red, rust or green. One key note to keep in mind is that both green and purple hues can vary from warm to cool tones, as well as the burgundy/rust colors. Be sure to take the color into natural light before purchasing your screen door.
