Moving is a task that no one enjoys. It’s time consuming as well as difficult physically and mentally. There are ways to make moving easier on the body, mind, and the wallet. With some careful planning and effort, your next move can be much easier in every way.

Before you’re ready to make the move, get rid of things you no longer use. If you’re a pack rat and are unsure about what to get rid of, ask yourself a very important question. Have I used this item in the last year to two? If you have not used the item within the past 1 or 2 years, chances are you never will. Make it your goal to clean at least one closet per day, and get rid of the clutter. Why move with things you may never use? There are charitable organizations that will come to your home, and pick up your gently used items. In exchange they will give you a receipt to use for a tax deduction. This is a great way to clean house, give to the needy, and gain a valuable tax deduction in the process. When moving time comes, you’ll have much less work to do. You won’t have to move things that are no longer of use, and you won’t have to unpack those things.

Start saving newspapers for wrapping fragile items, and save foam peanuts and any bubble wrap you receive. Bubble wrap can be quite expensive if you need a large quantity of it. Ask your friends and family members to save these items for you as well. You shouldn’t need to purchase any by the time you begin the packing process.

While you are cleaning out your closets, pack away items you want to keep but don’t use on a regular basis. Obtain sturdy boxes from a local store, buy a roll of box tape and a permanent marker, and start packing. Be sure to clearly mark the boxes so you are aware of the contents, and find an empty corner of your home in which to store them. Only pack the items you are sure you won’t need. It defeats the purpose if you have to open sealed boxes to search for something. If you pack unused items little by little, the task won’t seem quite as daunting.

If you plan on hiring a company to assist with your next move, call around to locate the best deal. Most moving companies charge by the hour and by the mile. Also, check with your local better business bureau to make sure there are no outstanding complaints against a company in question. Also, ask those you know if they are aware of a reputable moving company. Word of mouth is often your best resource for finding a moving company. Your local real estate agent may also be able to refer you to a moving company with a favorable track record.

If you plan on doing all of the work yourself, friends and relatives may be willing to assist. Throw a moving party and either cook or purchase a special meal for those who lend a helping hand. You will save money, and everyone will enjoy the rewards gained by their hard work.
