When you are thinking about building a deck, one question that always comes to mind is; what kind of deck should I build?

There are various types and styles of decks for you to choose from, and you should make your choice based on the size and shape of your yard, the style of your landscape and any ponds or pools. You are also going to want to consider drainage; for instance does your lawn collect water in one spot after a heavy rain? Or do you have a problem with erosion? Further, is your yard going to be exposed to harsh elements, such as extreme heat or cold or salt air?

Any kind of deck, or patio, will add value and beauty to your home as well as functionality to your yard. Here is a short rundown of the different types of decks, and perhaps this will make your decision easier.

Wooden Deck

This is by far the most popular type of deck, because of its beauty and functionality. But besides that it is very easy to construct using wooden planks and decking screws. Treated pine is the most common material, but redwood is also a good choice. For the most part these decks would be elevated above either a concrete slab or the grass. This is particularly useful if your yard is uneven. A deck would allow for a level, useful surface. If you are very creative and good with wood, you could even make your deck bi-level.

Terraced Deck

This type of deck works very nicely if your yard is on a slope or is already terraced. It would consist of flagstones inset into the grass, or sand, to form a smooth surface along the top of the terrace. The deck could blend into the terracing and may be further enhanced with a stone wall surrounding it, or an outdoor fireplace. This is a good choice if you want something unusual.

Concrete Deck

A concrete deck is a very useful and functional deck. It may be made very beautiful, although the material is just plain concrete by the use of accessories such as fountains and statuary. This type of deck works well if your lawn is level, or at least can be made level. It is a cheap, easy way to get a deck in a short amount of time. Construction of this type of deck consists of building a wooden form and then pouring concrete into it. These may take any shape, though square or rectangular is the most popular. Of course, a concrete deck may be used as a platform for a wooden or vinyl deck.

Vinyl Deck

You may choose a vinyl deck. This would be constructed of tough vinyl slats that may look like wood but would last much longer, especially in adverse climates. This might work well if you live by the ocean, or in a hot dry area.

No matter what type of deck you choose a deck can make your yard safer and more beautiful, while adding value to your home.
