Most people are not sure whether they will need a professional designer or architect when decorating, remodeling, or building homes. They are especially not sure of which one to call. Here is a guideline you can use to help with this dilemma.

A professional designer or interior designer’s job is to enhance the function, safety, and quality of interior spaces. They may also plan the interiors of existing structures that are undergoing renovation or expansion. When looking for an interior designer, if you will need someone to plan any demolition or construction at all, take extra care to be sure the design professional has a degree and license in Interior design versus being just an interior decorator.

If you have a strongly developed personal style or concrete opinions about what you do and do not find pleasing, you will be able to handle a decorating job yourself. If you are unsure of where to start, feel overwhelmed, or just do not have the time to do the job, call a professional to help you. Even if you know exactly how you want your rooms to turn out, you may still need the help of a design professional to help you access more choices in fabrics, flooring, and furniture than are available in local stores.

If you are remodeling your home and your plan includes moving walls, demolition, or minor construction, you will need the assistance of a professional designer. A professional designer can help with space planning, lighting design, kitchen layouts, or bathroom renovations. They will also take care of ordering, your materials and coordinating workers to get different elements of your job installed. In addition, they may have their own list of reliable workers, installers, and resources that you would not have been able to find on your own.

While a home designer is able to adjust a plan home for you and make design and furniture suggestions, they do not have the training to create complex or unique designs. Therefore, if you are building a new custom home or doing a major renovation, you will need to hire an architect. An architect’s main job is to create plans, from concept to aesthetics and supervises the construction of buildings or other large structures.

In building and renovation your new home, your architect will handle your floor plan design, decide product specifications for elements in your home, assist with zoning issues, and help choose elements that will impact the design. Having an architect to work with your builder or foreman wills save you a lot of stress and headaches during the building process. If your builder or contract company has an architect on staff, you may consider using them to save money.

Therefore, if you plan to make changes to the overall style, design or square footage of the house like adding a second floor, gutting and renovating part of the house or putting on an addition, be sure to consult with an architect before your start. However, if you are concentrating solely on the aesthetics of your home, contact a professional designer, as they will be less costly than an architect will.
