While everyday, we must face issues regarding safety, it is especially important to know the safety tips when it comes to operating any type of equipment, especially generators. Portable generators, or other generators serve a purpose when they are used for a limited amount of time when there is a short lapse in electrical power supply. However, hazards still exist.
The most important hazard to avoid while employing a generator is avoiding its Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning from the toxic engine exhaust, electric shock or, and fire. Annually, incidents occur, causing death or serious harm as a result, of portable generator utilization.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has clarified that the poison distributed from generators are common in closed areas, or areas that are partially closed. Generators should never be utilized in closed or partially closed areas. Carbon Monoxide (CO) can accumulate very quickly and cause death. Carbon Monoxide is not easily detected and can cause nausea, dizziness, or fainting. If you feel that you have been exposed to Carbon Monoxide, you should leave the building immediately, getting to the fresh air as quickly as possible. If you feel serious symptoms coming on, be sure to contact the proper professionals to avoid death, or serious illnesses.
Here are some general safety tips to employ when you are using or are around a portable electric generator:
ยท Avoid using generators indoors to prevent Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.
ยท Always refer to the generators instructions, while installing and using the generator. DO NOT forget to make reference to the generators instruction guide to prevent disasters, or even death.
ยท Install alarms in your building that offer protection against carbon monoxide.
ยท Keep your generator dry at all times; avoid areas that are saturated with liquids.
ยท Use heavy-duty outdoor extension cords, and be sure to plug all machines, appliances, et cetera directly into the generator.
ยท DO NOT ever attempt to power the house by plugging the generator into a wall outlet. This is an extremely dangerous practice called backing feeding. The safest method when connecting the generator to an outlet is to hire a professional electrician to handle the job.
ยท Avoid overloading the generator for best results. DO NOT connect multiple cords to the generator that may require more wattage than the generator can handle. READ your manual to know the wattage your generator will handle.
ยท Use proper power cords to avoid overloading the generator, which may cause fire or damage to your equipment.
ยท Avoid running the cords in areas that are heated, or may cause heat. DO NOT run your cords loosely in areas that may cause tripping.
ยท Be sure to carefully ground your generator properly to avoid shocks.
ยท Avoid storing gases, oils, or other flammable fluids in buildings, or areas near your generator, as gases float through the air and may lead to death or serious harm.
ยท DO NOT touch your generator, as it is often hot enough to cause harm.
ยท Be sure to shut your generator down when it is not in operation.
ยท Unauthorized persons should be kept far away from the generator at all times. Children, observers, et cetera are examples of unauthorized persons.
