Choosing what kind of generator is not always easy. Determining a price you can afford, wattage required, and how you plan to use the generator is a good start. Generators are used for various reasons at home, on the road or for business use.

If you live in an area that frequently has electrical outages, you may want to purchase a standby generator. Many of the home backup generators offer convenient backup power for electrical outages. The units are capable of meeting many power needs. The newer home backup generators offer easy-to-carry units, low noise pollution, and can power a 220 foot deep well pump at the same time it is running other appliances. Many of today’s series will only run loads needed to power a single home.

If you do a lot of camping or recreational activities, you may want to consider a smaller portable generator, preferably one with wheels. However, recreational generators are also available in hand size. The various types provide power to spare, and can be used for other purposes around the home. The recreational generators are easy to store and can run up to fifteen hours. Many of the recreational generators are relatively inexpensive and are easy to use. You also have the advantage of recharging batteries with many of the series. The nicety is that many of the recreational generators run in the backup with no or very little noise pollution.

If you are in construction or own a large factory, you will need a large generator to prevent overloading. In some cases though, a smaller generator may work. It depends solely on how much power is needed. The standard-size generators can run various power tools comfortably without overloading. When determining wattage you may consider a wattage calculator to estimate the various devices you will hook up to your generator.

Generators run on AC voltage, yet when they are heated for a long time, the power may drop. It is always wise to purchase a generator that produces at least 90% power supply. It is not wise to run a generator to its fullest power, regardless of the generator you chose. If you purchase a 2500-watt generator, you would want to run it only at 2300 watts at any time.

While considering the power needed, you must first determine its purpose. For example, if you intend to purchase a generator for your home, you would determine the wattage needed by finding out the wattage needed to run your well pump or other necessary electrical items. If you are purchasing a generator for work, you will need to figure how much power your air compressors or other equipment requires. You would then always buy a generator that can handle slightly more than your total wattage requirements.

Various power tools or refrigerators often require more power to run than other electrical equipment hooked up to a single generator. Pay attention to the wattage regardless of the circumstance to avoid overloading the generator, which may cause fire. Regardless of the type of generator needed, you will need to factor in cost-efficiency, wattage, and what kind of generator is best for your specific needs.
