When viewed under a microscope, dust mites are frightening looking creatures. They are everywhere in our homes. Dust mites occupy our beds, furniture and carpets. They feast on castoff skin cells that we shed on a regular basis. Although these formidable looking organisms are everywhere, they aren’t as dangerous as they look – unless you or a family member suffers from allergies.

You can reduce the number of dust mites in your home by changing bedding regularly. Remove sheets and pillowcases, and wash them in hottest water recommended for that particular material. Dry them thoroughly, and before putting them back on the beds, vacuum the mattresses using a sweeper that has a good-quality filtering system.

To further reduce dust mites on pillows and mattresses, cover them with plastic protectors designed especially for bedding. This will greatly help keep the dust mite population under control.

It’s important to thoroughly vacuum the carpets in your home. Carpets are a breeding ground for dust mites, especially around beds and other furniture. Use a high-quality vacuum with a filtering system. This will help considerably when trying to control allergens in the home.

Replace vacuum filters as often as recommended by the manufacturer. Although vacuum cleaners without bags are convenient, they are not always the best choice for those with allergy concerns. The person who has to empty the canister is subjected to dust, dirt, dust mites, and a number of other allergens. Between filter changes, thoroughly brush away any accumulated dust and matter. Do this outside to avoid breathing in airborne dirt and dust particles. Wear a mask if necessary when changing or cleaning vacuum cleaner filters.

Have your carpets professionally cleaned, or rent a steam cleaner as often as necessary. Vacuuming will greatly reduce allergens, but steam-cleaning carpets will reduce them further. Use the hottest water temperature that is recommended for your carpets.

Use a vacuum cleaner attachment to vacuum upholstery in your home. This is also a place where dust and its inhabitants congregate. Be sure to remove cushions and vacuum crevices as well. You’d be surprised at how much dirt and debris gather in the creases of upholstery.

Replace furnace filters once per month unless otherwise specified. There are furnace filters available that reduce allergens in the home. These high-quality filters have a longer life than cheaper substitutes. Although they cost considerably more than standard furnace filters, they are well worth the cost since they effectively reduce allergens and don’t have to be replaced as often.

For those who suffer mercilessly from airborne allergens, it may be necessary to keep windows closed and stay indoors whenever possible during times when mold and pollen counts are considered high. Although it isn’t possible to completely avoid allergens, running an air conditioner or evaporative cooler is also a way to help keep indoor air cleaner and healthier for those suffering with allergy symptoms. Local news programs and web sites list mold and pollen counts on a daily basis. Check these regularly for updates and information in order to avoid going outside on insalubrious days.

Lastly, if you have a basement, keep it free of moisture by running a dehumidifier during summer months when humidity is high. Dangerous mold can grow on concrete and rafters in a basement. Discard any items not being used that may promote the growth of mold and mildew. If dampness is present in your basement, it’s a good idea to call professionals if you are unable to find the source of the moisture and correct the problem yourself.
