Vinyl fences are a low maintenance alternative to wood fences. From a distance the look of a vinyl fence is no different from a fence made of wood. They are also used for many of the same reasons; for example privacy, pool enclosures, perimeter or property fences, horse paddocks, to keep pets inside the yard, or to keep animals out.

Styles

Vinyl fences are made of a type of plastic called polyvinyl chloride, often called PVC for short. Vinyl fences are available in a variety of styles. The most popular styles are picket, ornamental, panel, post and rail, and split rail. They can also be custom made.

Colors

The color selection is limited to white and pale shades of gray, or tan. This is because titanium dioxide, a white pigment, is used as a component of the vinyl, and makes it difficult to create darker colors. Titanium dioxide is used to prevent colors from yellowing or fading from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Sizes

Vinyl fences are sold in sections, usually 8 feet in length. Typical fence heights are 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 feet high. Fences that are 5 and 6 feet high include a middle rail for increased stability, as well as steel reinforcement in the bottom rail. Posts are typically 4†x 4†for lower fence heights and 5†x 5†for higher fences.

Costs

Vinyl fences initially cost more than wood fences, but cost less over the lifetime of the fence. Vinyl fences are low maintenance, weather well over time, and will not deteriorate. There is no additional painting, staining, or replacement of fence parts.

Advantages

There are many advantages to vinyl fences. They are durable, stable, and stronger than wood fencing. There are no splinters, sharp edges, or nails to worry about. Vinyl fences will not rot, warp, rust or corrode. Because the color is part of the vinyl material, the finish will not chip or peel. Vinyl fences are also recyclable. Best of all they are easy to assemble.

Tips

1. Buy vinyl fencing from a reputable company. All vinyl fences are not the same. Some manufacturers may skimp on the thickness of the vinyl. Also be sure that materials used to fasten the fence parts together are sturdy and high quality.

2. Use the grade of vinyl fence appropriate for the intended use. For example, a heavier grade vinyl should be used for a livestock paddock, while a lighter grade vinyl is appropriate for an ornamental picket fence in the front yard.

3. Under normal use a vinyl fence will not crack or break. Use caution when using mowers or trimmers to perform routine maintenance in order to prevent nicks and other damage from occurring.

4. A vinyl fence made of recycled materials is not as high in quality as one made of non-recycled (virgin) materials.

5. When installing posts, always use concrete footers for more stability.

6. A vinyl fence will self-extinguish if it catches on fire (for example a field or brush fire).

7. Use a non-abrasive cleaner or solution of mild detergent and water to clean a vinyl fence once a year, if desired.
