Honey is produced when things are blooming. I like to make honey from the first wild flowers in the spring and summer up until about July. In the fall, bees are making honey, but they are making it from goldenrod and ragweed. It makes honey, but I have been told by other beekeepers that you don't want to eat it. If you do it, you will never forget it. Apparently the taste is quite bitter and bad, but the bee can't tell the difference. To them it's food for winter. At this time of the year (the fall), it is getting colder and the bees know that queen is not laying as many eggs. There is not going to be any queen to fertilize, so they kill the drones by not letting them back into the hive. They just don't let it back in the hive and they starve to death and that's just the way it is. It is not mean or anything like that. They don't need to feed those extra mouths because they don't have any function. A beekeeper can tell the difference between a regular worker and a drone because it's bigger, it flies slower and it makes heck of a lot more noise when it is flying.
